Hit by train, elephant dies in Bengal


Siliguri, May 8 (IANS): An elephant has been killed after being hit by a passenger train in the Dooars region of northern West Bengal, officials said.

The accident occurred in Purba Khayerbari area between Madarihat and Hashimara of Alipurduar district on Thursday night when a herd of elephants was crossing the railway track.

According to Alipurduar Divisional Commercial Railway Manager (DCRM) Alokananda Sarkar, the Alipurduar-Siliguri Intercity Express hit one of the four jumbos around 9.50 p.m.

The elephant died on the spot.
