Bengaluru, May 8: The title of Rashtrakavi must be abolished as it is a relic of the bygone Royal era, which has no place in a democracy, says a high level committee entrusted with the task of searching a suitable person for the honour.

The committee headed by former judge Ko. Chennabasappa, which was asked to search a suitable candidate for the Rashtrakavi’s title, is believed to have made the recommendation for abolition of the title in its report submitted to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

The State Government had constituted the high-level committee to find a suitable person for bestowing the honour of Rashtrakavi after the last receipient of the honour G S Shivarudrappa passed away two years back.

The committee, which took four months to submit its report after meeting several writers, scholars and eminent literary personalities, has reportedly told the State Government that the post should be abolished.

The committee is believed to have pointed out that titles such as Rashtrakavi had lost their importance with the.

The committee felt the constitution does not permit any titles except those in the fields of education and military.

It remains to be seen how the State Government views of the report and takes a decision.
