EU leaders congratulate PM Cameron on re-election

Brussels, May 9 (IANS): European leaders expressed their eagerness to keep Britain in the European Union (EU) when congratulating David Cameron on his re-election as prime minister.

Cameron has said he would bring forward a planned referendum on Britain's membership in the EU in 2017 if his Conservative Party won the election.

The President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, sent congratulatory messages to Cameron in a statement on Friday.

"I wish to congratulate David Cameron on his re-appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following yesterday's (Thursday) elections," he said, reported Xinhua.

The President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, said: "I stand ready to work with you to strike a fair deal for the United Kingdom in the EU, and look forward to your ideas and proposals in this regard."
