Centre, state must work together: Mamata

Kolkata, May 9 (IANS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday emphasised that the centre and states must work together for India's development, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched three social security schemes in the city.

"If the centre and state work together on development programmes, then it augurs well for India as well as the states," she said during the launch programme.

The Trinamool Congress supremo also stressed enhanced coordination between the centre and states so that social schemes and programmes can be implemented properly.

Calling for working for the uplift of the "downtrodden and poor", Banerjee requested the centre to ensure banking coverage for all panchayats across the country.

"When we came to power in 2011, more than 1,000 panchayats out of 3,000 did not have banks. We gave banks space for Re.1 to open banking services in panchayats. Only 171 out of 1,000 are left to be covered. I request the central government that every panchayat must be covered with a banking facility," she said.
