President condoles deaths in Kashmir accident


New Delhi, May 11 (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday expressed grief over the death of at least 23 passengers in a bus accident in Jammu and Kashmir.

"I am saddened to learn that a bus carrying passengers met with an accident, leading to the loss of lives and injury to many. I understand relief operations are currently underway," the president said in his message to Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra.

Calling upon the state government and other agencies to provide all possible aid to the bereaved families, Mukherjee said: "Please convey my heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. I also wish speedy recovery to the injured persons."

At least 23 people were killed and 38 others injured when a passenger bus rolled down a deep gorge in Marothi in Udhampur district on Monday, police said.
