Uttar Pradesh jolted by earthquake


Lucknow, May 12 (IANS): People in the state capital and other parts of Uttar Pradesh were jolted Tuesday afternoon by an earthquake though no major damage or loss of life has been reported.

Officials said the tremors were felt in Lucknow, Kanpur, Meerut, Jaunpur, Mainpuri, Shamli, Balia, Barabanki, Deoria, Jaunpur, Pilibhit, Ghazipur, Basti, Maharajganj, Azamgarh, Ghaziabad and Noida.

Home department officials said there were no reports of any major damage or loss of life so far. People panicked and ran out of their offices and homes when the tremors began.

Lucknow was hit by tremors thrice within 30 minutes. An event was underway at the official residence of chief minister Akhilesh Yadav when the first tremors were felt.

He was whisked away to safety by his security personnel and the media persons were asked to go out in the open.
