Mangaluru, May 12: Health minister U T Khadar on Tuesday May 12 held discussions with doctors of the health department, the deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim and ZP CEO Srividya regarding the recent developments at Lady Goschen hospital, whose superintendent Dr Shakunthala was recently demoted for failure to perform her duty. The action was taken on May 8, when the family members of a lady named Poovakka held a protest following her sudden death.

Addressing a press meet later, Khadar said, "Lady Goschen hospital is the pride of Mangaluru. It has made a name for itself when it comes to mother and child care. However, in the last two weeks two incidents of sudden deaths took place here, and taking serious note of these incidents, the health department and the district administration is holding this meeting in the interest of the people.

"A committee has already been formed to investigate the recent incident (Poovakka death) and once it submits its report, we will look into matter," he added.

"There is no shortage of gynaecologists and pediatricians in Lady Goshen hospital. But I have been told that there is demand for full-time physicians and in the coming days this demand will be fulfilled. Presently there are 60 nurses in the hospital but there is a 50 percent scarcity, hence the health department and the district administration have planned to increase the number of nurses in the hospital. Senior nurses in Wenlock hospitals will be deputed to Lady Goschen whenever necessary, and the nurses who
complete their graduation from Wenlock will be given stipend. Stipend will be provided by the Wenlock Arogya Samiti," he said.

Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim said, "In Dakshina Kannada there were six maternal deaths in 2014 and this year, there have been five deaths in just two-and-a-half months. This is very disturbing."

Regarding the demotion of Dr Shakunthala, he said, "This is administration matter. We are not punishing anyone. Taking such a measure is left to us, and we have done it in view of better functioning of the hospital. The reports on the recent incident will come in three days."

Kadar bhai the shortage of doctors in govt hospitals and shortage of lecturers in colleges are not new .If you are really concern about that why cant you appoint or arrange for that.Dont open new govt hospitals before successfully handling the prevailing system.IN our country we can see excessive employee cooperative environment in govt service sector not for professional obligation, but in large for kaamchor purposes.Thats why it lacks in standard

This explanations are nothing short of a confession. People are not against punishing those who have done wrong, be it an omission or a commission. Most pertinent question is whether due process under service rules are followed in this case or the entire action from the administration was a knee-jerk reaction? Whether the accused is given an opportunity to defend her position before the judgement is delivered? Let the Health Minister first look in to infrastructure and manpower at these hospitals to list out his priorities towards providing quality healthcare. The fact that a thousand bedded and century old hospital fails to get a license for Medical Collage whereas a mushroomed hospital is waiting for final MCI recognition few miles away under private sector appears to be stranger than fiction! Whether medical or administrative negligence is proved in the instant case? We do not expect the Health Minister to differentiate an anuerysm and embolism with key prognosis. Here we needs a health minister with minimum a medical degree, as the least he should know the basics of modern medicine to interpret medical enquiry report before punishing a qualified medical practitioner!!!

Mr Ibrahim,D C of Mangalore,I have high respect for you regarding your concern for Citizens and their hardship. You have noticed 5 deaths in two and half months. Dr.Shakunthala was demoted for negligence. Mr Ibrahim, why You do not see that Ministers are tying up Traffic. This causes the delay for Ambulances delivering the Patients to Hospital on time. Even this may be the cause for deaths due to delay in emergency Medical treatment. Why Health Minister do not see this as negligence.
At the same token there were close to 25 deaths on roads due to negligence of RTO in enforcing Road Regulations. Also You have not taken any action on MCC Engineers and Officers of their negligence. Pedestrians are dyeing due to shortage of Foot paths. Drains are not covered and People walk on roads. Builders are building without any parking spaces due to corruption of Planning Department. Vehicles are parked on road causing deaths. Mr.
Khader did not suspend Asraf from Congress party for causing traffic jam which could have caused traffic deaths. He only saw Dr.Shakunthala as the cause of woman's death without knowing where the tail end of problem.
    Big Show Master.
