31 killed in Philippines factory fire


Manila, May 13 (IANS): At least 31 people were killed in a fire that broke out in a sandal factory in Valenzuela City in Metro Manila, capital of the Philippines, on Wednesday noon, fire bureau officials said.

Renato Marcial, Bureau of Fire Protection spokesperson, said the fire broke out around 11.28 a.m. at the warehouse along Sto Rosario street in Tatalon district in Ugong village, Xinhua news agency reported.

He said the fire was put out at around 6.47 p.m., adding the fatalities were still "unidentifiable".

According to reports in Philippine media, around 300 workers were trapped inside the warehouse when the fire broke out.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.
