Coast receives good rain - lightening injures three, inflicts losses

Mangaluru, May 14: Coastal Karnataka has been receiving copious rain since the last some days, both early mornings and late evenings. On Wednesday too, rains came and drenched almost all the areas of the twin-districts.

Rain accompanied by thunder and lightening was reported from Puttur, Dharmasthala, Beltangady, etc. Some regions got light rain. Many areas of Kundapur, Karkala and Kundapur taluks of Udupi district reported good rain. Moodbidri was one of the regions to get heavier rain.

Three members of a family living in Nitte, Karkala tlauk, suffered severe burn injuries after lightning struck their home on Wednesday. The injured are Surendra (35), Vimala (30), and Sushmita (3), all from the family of Balakrishna Moolya from Padavu in Nitte, Balakrishna Moolya and two others sustained minor injuries as tiles of the house got shattered and broken pieces fell on them. Various household items including electronic and electrical appliances, approximately valued at two lac rupees, were also gutted in this incident.

Lightening struck the earth some distance away from the above house and then made its way to the house through the earth, leaving a trail of straight and deep burrow leading to the house. Meter board and main switches were seen to have been tossed some distance away. Tahsildar, Raghavendra S, and revenue officer, Devendra Nayak, visited the spot and assessed losses.

The meteorological department has predicted rain coupled with thunder, wind, and lightening to continue in the state's coast and hinterlands for three to four days more. It said low pressure area has been formed over the Bay of Bengal.
