Gunmen attack guest house in Afghan capital

Kabul, May 14 (IANS): A gunfight broke out at a guest house frequented by foreigners here in the Afghan capital on Wednesday night, an official source said.

"The firing took place at 8.30 p.m. in Shahr-e-Naw area. We still cannot provide precise details on casualties. There is fear of possible casualties," the source told Xinhua.

The clash is still going on there, said the source.

The security forces arrived at the scene shortly after the gun shots. The area has been cordoned off by the security forces.

A meeting was underway and several foreign officials were expected to attend it before the attack took place, a witness said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Taliban routinely claims responsibility for such attacks.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since mid-April when the militant group launched an annual rebel offensive against Afghan security forces.
