Mangalore, Apr 1: Palm Sunday was celebrated in Mangalore on April 1. With meaningful procession to the church, the faithful carried the blessed palm leaves singing praises to God.

Palm Sunday is a significant ceremony for Christians. It is a delight to find the significance of the palm branches in the episode of Jesus entering Jerusalem.

Palm Trees were a prominent symbol of fertility and hospitality in the ancient Middle East. In the part of the world where water was scarce and the environment harsh, Palm trees flourish, providing food and shelter.

The palm tree played an important role in the life of ancient Middle East people that the ancient pagans considered the palm tree to be the tree of life.

Commemorating the grand welcome accorded to Jesus into Jerusalem, the Sunday before Easter is celebrated as Palm Sunday.
