First-year student jumps to death in Kolkata


Kolkata, May 16 (IANS): A first-year undergraduate student, hailing from Patna, allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of his college hostel here, police said on Saturday.

According to Dhrubajyoti Dey, deputy commissioner of eastern suburban division, at about 9.30 p.m. on Friday night, 18-year-old Souvik Sinha, a first-year B.Sc student at St. Xavier's College jumped from the sixth floor of the hostel on A.J.C. Bose Road here.

Dey said he was declared brought dead at Sana Nursing Home.

"Prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide. We have not yet discovered a suicide note. We are carrying out an investigation and talking to family members," said Dey.
