Nigerian among seven arrested in Punjab with heroin


Chandigarh, May 16 (IANS): Seven people, including a New Delhi-based Nigerian, were arrested while smuggling five kg of heroin, cash and foreign currency, police in Punjab's Jalandhar said on Saturday.

Jalandhar rural district police chief Jaspreet Singh Sidhu told the media that the heroin, estimated at Rs.25 crore in the international market, Rs.5.90 lakh in cash and $7,000 were recovered from the smugglers.

"We got a tip that the smugglers were carrying drugs from Jammu and Kashmir to New Delhi. We set up nakas (check-points) to apprehend them," Sidhu said.

Police apprehended the smugglers from three locations. Three cars were also impounded following their arrest.

The Nigerian national, Eze, and a physically challenged person, Rakesh Chander Gogna, were among those arrested.

In another incident, railway police arrested two people from the Ludhiana railway station and recovered Rs.40 lakh in cash from them.

Police also recovered two locally-made pistols and two kg of opium from them.
