India announces USD 1 billion credit line to Mongolia

Ulan Bator, May 17 (PTI): India today announced a credit line of USD 1 billion to Mongolia to expand its economic capacity and infrastructure, as they decided to upgrade their relationship from Comprehensive to "Strategic Partnership".

Narendra Modi, the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Mongolia, held wide ranging talks with his counterpart Chimed Saikhanbileg here following which the two sides inked 14 agreements covering defence, cyber security, agriculture, renewable energy and health sector.

"I am pleased to announce that India will provide a Line of Credit of USD one billion to support expansion of Mongolia's economic capacity and infrastructure," Modi said at a joint press interaction with Saikhanbileg at State Palace.

Asserting that Mongolia is an integral part of India's Act East Policy, he said the destinies of the two countries are closely linked with the future of Asia Pacific Region.

"We can work together to help advance peace, stability and prosperity in this region," the Prime Minister said.

"In a reflection of our commitment to further deepen our relationship, we have decided to upgrade our Comprehensive Partnership to 'Strategic Partnership'," he said.

Stating that it was a great honour to be the first Prime Minister of India to visit Mangolia, Modi said, "It is a special privilege to come on the occasion of two important milestones that unite us – 25 years of democracy in Mongolia and 60 years of diplomatic relations between our two nations."

Commenting on his counterpart Saikhanbileg's remarks that India is the "spiritual neighbour and third neighbour" of Mongolia, Modi said, "We will always fulfil the responsibility that comes with this honour."

"I was very pleased with my discussions with Prime Minister today. We have strong convergence of views on bilateral relations and our regional and international partnership," he said.

"The agreements that we have just signed speak to the depth of the relationship. These cover economic relations, development partnership, defence and security, and people-to-people contacts," the Prime Minister added.

Modi said the cooperation between National Security Councils of the two countries will provide a strategic framework for cooperation.

India will also help establish a cyber security centre in Mongolia's defence and security establishment.

"We attach high importance to our security cooperation. We will continue to participate in each other's defence exercises. The agreements today will deepen our cooperation in border security and cyber security," Modi said.

Noting that the trade and investment relations between two countries are modest, Modi said, "We will take our economic partnership to a new level."

"There is huge potential in civil nuclear sector, mining, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and dairy. We should also explore the possibilities of using digital technology to expand our economic relations," he said.

He also announced to increase the ITEC training slots for Mongolia from 150 to 200 and establish an India-Mongolia Joint School.

"I conveyed to Prime Minister that we greatly value our international partnership, which is based on our friendship, shared spiritual heritage and democratic values. These also provide solid foundation for our cooperation in our region," Modi said, adding that the two countries are starting a "new era in our partnership".

The Prime Minister also thanked Mongolia for its strong support for India's permanent membership of UN Security Council.

Modi, who arrived here last night on the second leg of his three-nation tour, was earlier given a ceremonial welcome at the State Palace.

India has a strong linkage of Buddhism and democracy with Mongolia and was the first country outside the Soviet bloc to establish diplomatic relations with it.

India feels that there is excellent potential for cooperation with Mongolia in the minerals sector. Mongolia is mineral-rich country in coking coal, copper, rare earths and uranium.

India already has a civil nuclear agreement with Mongolia which provides for uranium exports to the country once the domestic laws here permit prospecting and mining.

Mr.G.K.Shetty,Keep your sarcastic comment for yourself. Post another table of non congress PMs and their achievements including ABVP and Modi.If you go back and check what India did since 1947, even Europeans will be ashamed of with achieving Mangalyaan, Nuclear club, having our own space programme, own missiles for our defense forces..etc..etc.. If you just woke up, let me tell you America and China supported India's bid long time ago even before Modi became the CM of Gujarat, do not try to fool people. Do you have any statistics for Japanese investment in India?? Do you know the largest car maker in India is from Japanese collaboration? What happened to that Nano plant in Gujarat?? What you know about the nuclear deal in first place? NDA opposed the deal by tooth and nail when they were in opposition and MMS made that historic deal (no country ever got that concession) with US without signing NPT which paved way for this deal. You talked about discussing possible investment but you forgot that there is already investment by MNCs like Coke, Pepsi, Microsoft..etc already but what they are doing now is increasing that business which is not a big deal..business is there to expand. India gets investment from Israel even without Indian PM begging before. Read the Rafael deal (original as well as the present) to understand the deal properly and see who is the winner now India or France (of coarse Adani is Indian, isn't it?) All nuclear deal is possible since India had that deal which paved way and whichever government comes that was the priority deal (nothing new in it) See how Indian economy is sold to Chinese (your beloved investor Xi). You looks like just woke up to politics and world affairs couple of days ago. BTW, Congress did not promise to bring the black money and distribute 15 lacs to everyone within 100 days.

Dear Readers, all are commenting on Prime Ministers Foreign Tour. OK, at one point i agree with you that its waste of money,

Please rethink about our pappus 56 Days UNKNOWN forign trip recently, is there any 1 penny profit to nation? he is not going to trip in his fathers money, thats also public money.
Sonia Gandhi recently had a operation in US, thats not from her fathers money thats also from poor peoples money.

i think in in couple of year back some MLA had visit to some countries to learn about cultivation. Do u think is that necessary? we call our country as agricultural country with 65% of population are farmers.
What State govt is doing by Daily 1 "BHAGYA"? People dnt have money to eat for 2 times? Very Less. Instead of making powerfull by education and skills govt making people lazy with these "BHAGYA"s.

Am not telling Mr. Modi is 100% perfect. But compare to MMS, RG and other many politician, MODI stands on top.

Its a good move by Mr. President to get support from small countries in UN. some people commented like they know every thing, but in fact they dnt know anything about this foreign aid money. This money will be long term loan with minimum interest rate. Even Indian govt take loan from other countries for development. and India gave loan to many more countries too. People talking like Mr. President is throwing money in water, even Congress led UPA govt. announced 5 Billion dollar to African countries in 2009 for development in 143 sectors. Previous BJP led NDA govt. gave money to Guyana (a small country in North America) to construct 2 cricket stadium. in these foreign aid 50% will come back to India itself as most of the works will award to Indian companies. Even the said 1 Billion amount will be distributed to Construction/ health / education/infrastructure/power generation/ awareness and many more works.
Either this is not first time in history to donate to poor country or Mr. President is wasting money. this is a each countries foreign policy just to get support from them.

All the money will be transfered to EXIM bank (Export Import Bank)
aas per the Exim bank policy origin of 85% goods / services to be India.

I hope i have cleared atleast something. Reply / comments awaiting

If that was the case why didn't you phrase as "We will wipe out tears from every Nepali only if you request it". Feku is real crack star.

..why cant you reveal name!!..its ok no problem..by the way did you read any national paper, any..like TOI,INDIAN EXPRESS,DECCAN HERALD..if not, you should know that NEPAL GOVT requested to stop all rescue efforts & informed rescue team of every country to leave (yes, to leave) since they are focusing on relief now, not on rescue..so INDIA like any other country removed army rescue teams & only relief teams working there..Now, if NEPALI Govt request again then your dear MODI will send Army..then why you are crying!!

The reason why I have different opinion from you is I don't read news from any media houses you mentioned as I consider them as Congi agents.
I rely only Dawn and Geo news and ring up Nagpur or Kalladka for any clarifications.
So I read the news like this " Nepalis were tired of Fekugiri by my dear feku so they kicked hard on his bu^ and said get lost for the better along with his 20,000 virtual cheddies who were working hard day and night for rehabilitating the displaced Nepalis"

For the information of all Daijians what is a line of Credit ?
Line of credit is a form of Loan given to Indian Exporters through Indian Bank that is EximBank India .Exim Banks head office is at Mumbai ,India.
How will this help India ?
India is getting foreign exchange in the form of US Dollars and EximBank manages these funds .How does the Exim Bank makes profit is by giving loans to Foreign Banks for the export and development of Infrastructure by Indian Companies in Foreign countries .Ultimately this is helping Indias business and Mongolia is just getting a project completed in their soil .Ultimate benificiary is Indian Company .The top infrastructure companies in India are Shaporji Palonji,GMR etc they will benifit from this .You may visit Eximbanks website for all these details .This is not free money to Mongolia as said by somebody here.

    India First,
Let our honorable PM show guts to show the doors to the Kashmir separatists who raise pak flag within hindustan in a BJP/Mufti lead coalition govt in J&K.
My point of view was only to reflect that Hindustan is already a regional super power due to the well crafted diplomacy of democratically elected legacy govt's who ruled better part of our post independence till date.
By giving some $ no country become worlds super power. On the contrary our honorable PM of hindustan is openly begging(without prejudice, if i may say so) and lobbying for $ investment from beef & snake(Lord Nagaraja) eating countries.

India is one of the poorest countries in the world. Lakhs of people of India are dying because of poverty. Per capita income of India is very poor. Many farmers are committing suicide. Then why PM has to help Mangolia. First he has to bring up the the financial position of Indian people. Rich countries like US can help them.

Why does Modi need to waive off the farmer's loans ? Didn't the UPA govt waive it off a few years ago? If one cannot afford to repay a loan he shouldn't take it in the first place. A loan taken must be repaid. A foolish move of the UPA govt to waive off loans.
