Mangaluru, May 19: National Environment Care Federation on Tuesday May 19 objected to the proposed shifting of the DC's office to Padil, citing several reasons and claiming that it was an unnecessary move.

Addressing a press meet here on Tuesday May 19, activist Daniel Tauro, joint secretary of the Federation said, "The existing building is equipped with various facilities and there is no valid reason for the construction of the new district complex at Padil.

 

"No authorized person has pointed out any shortcomings in the existing building. The decision of shifting the building has been taken during the KDP meeting by the district incharge minister. The district incharge minister is not authourized to take any decision on the shifting, as the DC's office comes under the revenue ministry. The cabinet recently approved the move. The orginal decision was taken by a competent authority and the RTC of the land at Padil was changed much in advance," Tauro said.

"The current DC office was built just 25 years ago, incurring a huge expenditure. The government plans to spend another Rs 40 crore to build the new DC office. Is it right to spend crores of rupees every 25 years? The government does not have money to spend on footpaths, drainages and markets, but it wants to spend Rs 40 crore on this project," he said.

Tauro further added, "The land at Padil where the construction of the new district complex has been proposed has more than 478 trees as well as rare varieties of trees which provide food and shelter to various species of animals and birds. As per the definition, this land also qualifies to be deemed forest area. A lawsuit has been filed in the court in this regard."

NECF activists Shashidar Shetty, Dinesh Holla, Dinesh Pai and others were present.
