Shiradi Ghat unlikely to open by June 1, only 50 percent work completed

Mangaluru: May 23 (DHNS): Shiradi Ghat, which connects Mangaluru with Bengaluru, is unlikely to be thrown open to the public on June 1.

Only 50 per cent of the work has been completed and officials have promised to finish the work by June-end. However, if it rains, the work is likely to be delayed further, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said.

Work on Shiradi Ghat stretch connecting Heggadde near Sakleshpur to Kempu Hole near Uppinangady had begun on January 1. The work is being taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 69.90 crore. With the closure of Shiradi Ghat section, vehicles will have to travel via Mani-Mysuru Road and Charmadi Ghat.

It may be recalled that Dakshina Kannada in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai had inspected the work on April 21 and had announced the opening of the road on June 1.

However, owing to unseasonal rain, the work got delayed. Work on culverts and four minor bridges have been completed.

Work on side pitching, signboards and crash barriers will be taken up after completing the road work.

Pavement quality concrete (PQC) has to be laid out, which can be done only when the temperature is below 30 degrees Celsius.

Pls check previous news report of this world record-making ‘’road repair work’’ that has already cost helpless tax payers over 170 crores for a mere 26 km! The repair work is from Kempu Hole to Addahole and from Gulaga¬lale-Mar¬nahalli. The entire Shiradi Ghat stretch of the highway has remained closed for vehicles since January 2.

In any other developed country the small stretch would have been completed in just 2-3 weeks and considering the unbelievable costs being spent and budget overruns (initial estimate was Rs 69.90 crores) , the contractors would have laid a 4-lane, steel-reinforced concrete highway for over 100 KMs!

The project cost was Rs 10,800 for every cubic metre of pavement quality concrete (PQC). As things stand now, the per-cubic-meter-cost (contractor is Ocean Constructions) has already shot over 12 times the initial amount approved! What is a matter of concern for safety is that there has been no monitoring of teh quality of concrete being prepared at the batch mixing plant set up at Marnahalli, amidst of shoddy-sub standard work by those who have inspected the road so far.

From Ramanath Rai to Siddu, H.C. Mahadevappa to Gadkari to the worthless 10th STD pass MP from the costal belt to Oscar to DVS Gowda, everyone has had a major share of the loot along with the most-corrupt NHAI contractors, who all gain massively by delaying the work and seeking additional funds, for as long as possible, using every excuse imaginable!

On April 22nd, South Kanara District in-charge Minister Ramanath Rai had announced that 43% of the work was completed and vehicular movement will start by May end. Now as May end is nearing, the news is that only 50% work is complete!

What’s more, after a claim that 50% of the small stretch of the white-elephant-project (remember it is not a new road but just a repair work) took almost 6 months, they are all, once again taking the public for a royal ride by assuring that the remaining 50% will be completed in just 1 month!

To maintain quality, Engineering works should not be rushed. It is not possible to lay concrete if it rains.
However temp of below 30 degrees should not be an excuse. It is absolutely correct that concrete temp while laying should be less than 30 degrees which can be achieved by adding ice to Mixer while maintaining W/C ratio. Adding ices accepted by International standards. Moreover if atmospheric temp requires below thirty, concrete can be laid at early morning or late evening hours with aid of floodlights.

Patience and tolerance is the KEY. The unseasonal rain has delayed the construction project, hence let us give the benefit of the doubt to the road contractors who have to perform a good job. We have waited so long for a good concrete road hence some more time in waiting should not entail any problem. Nearly 70 crores of rupees spent on the Shiradi Ghats road should bear some fruitful results. Let the contractors do a good job. Let the concrete settle down well and let good roads show up for the benefit of a smooth traffic.
We have waited so long and therefore some more time in waiting should allow the roads to complete in a satisfactory manner.

Let us give the benefit of the doubt to the Road Contractors, and we shall have the best roads in the months to come.

Hope is life and the life is hope. Let us therefore hope that the unseasonal rain will cease and the sunshine will appear. Consequently the concrete will dry up and the entire road will come to a completion.

What a joy would it be to witness a good road between Mangalore and Sakhlaspur via Shiradi Ghats. The scenic beauty will appear soon and the road contractors will smile at us when a good job is done.

It took 05 months to do 50% job & another 50% will be done in one month - wow what logic are we talking about here? Fooling public.! Public now knows that politicians and contractors are a team where they can make money. DC is just a scapegoat for all these issues. Why cant we have proper working style with proper contractors or out source it to people who do their job efficiently like those who laid Pune - Mumbai Express or so. ! At least we will have better quality roads.
As Vikas has written now they will hurriedly finish this job compromising quality & next year yet again we will have same problem. But the concerned officials will make money..!!

Only 50%work is completed till now (after 5 months) now balance 50% work will be completed in 1 month...always people are getting fooled by giving these type of unrealistic data...Further it is only 13km out of 26 km. So again Road will be closed for another one year. Now authorities say it is not required to be closed for that 13 kms.then why it is closed for current work? it shows whoever rule our India we cant change the habit of giving baseless statement. but fortunately we can blame rain for all our irregularities/delays like how children are saying stomach pain for not doing the home work.....and we keep quite even if we dont believe it.............

Our most Corrupt politicians & third grade contractors have miserably failed to provide us & to maintain the good Ghat Roads built by British. Now the only solution is to bring back foreign Contractors to entrust them to provide us good infrastructure.

CONGRESS has never done any work neatly in this country! "start to finish" - except loot!

one more speciality is, they will announce new schemes, new policies, new roads and bridges etc - put a foundation stone , mostly it is by Oscar fernandes/Veerappa Vidwan who does this job or some other big leader!... they never do it.. but then when someone comes and does the job, may be other party or may be their own MP like Jayaprakash hegde, they will discredit it and say "what is new in it, the stone was laid by us long back, they are all copying our programs"! vhe vhe vhe...

Shiradi ghat dala avve avaste! unless court intervenes they will not complete it!
