Mangaluru, May 23: 'Uretta Kannda Siri', the maiden collection of Tulu poems written by Dubai-based Prakash Rao Payyar, president of Dhwani Prathishthana, UAE was released on Saturday May 23 at Tulu Sahitya Academy here.

MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik released the anthology in a programme organized by the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy and Dhwani Prathishthana.

Addressing the gathering, Karnik said, "Litterateurs should drop demanding rights which divide the minds and work to correct mistakes in the society. In present day, a writer needs to create consciousness and awaken a cultured society. During pre-Independence days, writers propagated about people's rights, and even today writers continue to do the same. There should be a positive approach if we have to witness the true beauty of society. Litterateurs should unite the society by correcting its mistakes. Hence those who are in the field of literature and culture have the most responsibility."

He also congratulated Prakash Payyar on bringing out his anthology of Tulu poems and wished him good luck.

NSS state officer Dr Gananath Yekkar who gave an introduction about the anthology said, "This is a beautiful compilation of poems in Tulu literature. Prakash Payyar has touched every aspect of Tulunadu in his poems. Though he is living in a foreign land, he has made immense efforts to nurture the field of Tulu literature."

Abu Dhabi Karnataka Sangha president Sarvotham Shetty who also spoke on the book said, "Prakash Payyar's poems are really beautiful. He is not only a good poet but also a good theatre director who has staged plays of Girish Karnad in Dubai. His contribution to the field of literature should be appreciated.

He also expressed his disappointment over the non-inclusion of Tulu language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

Dr Varadharaj Chandragiri, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, Suresh Shetty Gurme also spoke on the occasion and appreciated the achievements of Prakash Rao Payyar.

Tulu Sahitya Academy president Janaki Brahmavar who presided over the programme appreciated the poet for his work.

Good to see writers from Tulu nadu writing something in Tulu. Most of the Tuluvas such as were ashamed of their mother tongue Tulu and wrote in Kannada. Tuluvas have to overcome the inferiority complex we have on our language culture ect. We must be proud of our language Tulu. We also must for Tulu Nadu state which will improve our language, culture and ofcourse the lifestyle of the people.
