Udupi: Obstruction of police officer on duty - Hotelier booked

Udupi, May 24: A complaint has been booked in Manipal police station against a hotelier on charges of hindering a police officer from doing her duty.

A hotelier from Eshwarnagar in Manipal is the person booked. The complainant is assistant sub inspector Shobha attached to the Manipal police station.

As per details, officer Shobha was on duty at around 1 am of May 22 night. She spotted a group of 6 persons smoking cigarettes. The persons were warned about the offence and were also fined. When the officer was giving them the receipt for the fine, the hotelier talked rudely with her.

As per the complaint, he said that he was a hotelier and nothing a police officer like her could do to him. He also allegedly used abusive words against her.

Now the hotelier has been booked after the officer complained to the police station regarding the matter.

    We are deviating the point of discussion from Udupi / Manipal to Dubai. If the police officer has a duty to perform, there should be some law which says that the area were 6 guys were smoking may be a No Smoking Zone. Hotel Management too need to implement guidelines to the smokers not to smoke were it's marked NO SMOKING. Now the zone were it's marked NO SMOKING, whether it's right or wrong, we may not be able to decide. But when the marking took place as No Smoking, there could be some reason for doing so other wise why the Hotel Management took this measure?

    It happened in Rashidiya also. They wait for you to finish smoking and when you through the butt on the foothpath or road, they fines.

    Karama area and people were fined for smoking. why? What is the reason? Is smoking in the open or road side also prohibited over there ? Can you elaborate ?

    Two weeks back on Friday after having breakfast in Karama area my 2 friends were smoking and same time municipality guy was watching them and recorded in his mobile and fined them AED. 100 each. but instead accepting that, friends argued that there is no sign board for no smoking and that lead them to pay AED. 250/ each!!! one cigarette cost them AED. 250/- after breakfast!!

    If same things happens in India also, then our people will be disciplined.

    What about people spitting, littering public places with waste and using sideways/walls for urinating.
    If at all, there is a sign no-smoking, it’s a violation to smoke. Smoking in coffee restaurants or at any eateries should be prohibited.

    It is like traffic cop....! They will always find something to impose fine, if nothing...your side mirror is teda!! Instead police should focus on crime than such trivial issues like found smoking cigarette!!
