Chikkamagaluru, May 25: A police constable, who was reportedly suffering from depression since the death of his wife whom he had loved and married, committed suicide.

Madhusudan (28), a police constable from Tarikere, hanged himself on the night of Saturday May 23 at Chokkanahalli near Sampigehalli, policemen said.

Madhusudan had fallen in love with a girl named Mamata. After marrying her a year back, the couple had settled down in Andrahalli. Mamata had committed suicide by hanging herself at her home last month. It is said that she was frustrated at the family problems. After her death, Madhusudan had relocated to Chokkanahalli.

After Mamata's demise, Madhusudan started suffering from bouts of depression, and went on long leave. Although he began to attend to his duties recently, he was not his real self, his colleagues said. He left the police station at 6 pm on Saturday, reached his home, and hanged himself from a ceiling fan. Policemen said his death came to light when a local visited him at around 8 pm on Saturday.

Sampigehalli police, who have registered the case, suspect that their colleague, Madhusudan, would have decided to end life as he was unable to bear the agony of his wife's death. His body was handed over to relatives after postmortem.
