'Poroshenko fails to turn into true president of Ukraine'

Kiev, May 25 (IANS): Petro Poroshenko, dubbed "Chocolate King" for owning Ukraine's largest confectionery manufacturer Roshen, has failed to turn into a true Ukrainian president, Andrei Zolotarev, the head of the Kiev-based analytical Third Sector Centre, said on Monday.

Poroshenko, 49, celebrates exactly one year on Monday since being elected as Ukraine’s president.

"Poroshenko has failed to turn from the president of the Roshen corporation into a true president of Ukraine... Instead of selling the Roshen corporation, Poroshenko has started speaking about selling the state assets and land," Zolotarev said at a press conference.

Now as Ukraine’s ratings are nearing the "junk" levels "any sale is either nonsense or malicious intent," the analyst said, according to TASS news agency.

One of Poroshenko’s election pledges of "a new life" has in fact resulted into a return of the Ukrainians to the period of the 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Zolotarev said.

"The declared path towards Europe has become very sophisticated. Instead of democracy, we have received obscurantism, and the fight against corruption reminds one of a Brazilian soap opera. The level of our life is in fact a European one, but if judging from the standards of the wild capitalism epoch," he said.

As a politician, Poroshenko has had a rather "successful year" as he managed to avoid a possible power struggle with Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, according to the analyst.

Vladimir Fesenko, the head of the Penta Centre for applied political studies, said Poroshenko’s success formula is "moderation and flexibility". The main problems were the delays in reforms and the fight against corruption, and also wrong personnel decisions, he said.

Poroshenko now has to focus on the solution to the social and economic issues in Ukraine, he added.
