President mourns loss of lives in UP train accident


New Delhi, May 26 (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee has mourned the loss of lives in a train derailment on Monday in Uttar Pradesh.

Two people were killed and over 100 others injured when eight coaches of the Ranchi-Jammu Tawi Muri Express derailed in Uttar Pradesh's Kaushambi district, officials said.

In a message to Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik on Monday, the president said: "I am sad to learn about the derailment of a train in Kaushambi district in which some persons have lost their lives and many others are injured. I understand rescue and relief operations are currently underway."

Conveying his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, the president wished speedy recovery to the injured, a Rashtrapati Bhawan release said on Tuesday.

Mukherjee also urged the Uttar Pradesh government and other authorities concerned to provide all possible aid to the bereaved families, who have lost their near and dear ones as well as medical assistance to the injured.
