Kolkata, May 26 (IANS): Reacting sharply to union Home Minister Rajnath Singh's statement that the Teesta river water sharing deal with Bangladesh would be finalised soon, West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress on Tuesday said that his remarks made without consulting the state government were uncalled for.

"He should not have spoken about Teesta treaty without consulting the state government. It was uncalled for," Trinamool secretary general Partha Chatterjee said.

Addressing a press conference in the city on the completion of one year of the Narendra Modi-led government in office, Singh had hoped for clinching the deal and getting the support of the Mamata Banerjee-led government on the issue.

"Teesta deal will also be finalised soon. We are confident of getting full cooperation from the Mamata Banerjee government," Singh said.

The union minister also came under TMC fire for saying that Bengal's law and order situation needed to be improved.

"Law and order in Bengal is far better than other states. Rajnath Singh ji spoke like a party leader and not a central minister. Was he trying to please his party workers," asked Chatterjee.

Expressing "very serious concern" over a plethora of complaints about manufacturing of crude bombs in West Bengal, the union minister had called for improving the law and order situation in the state.

Singh also assured the state government of assistance by the centre for ushering in development, ensuring security and maintaining law and order.

"So far as law and order in West Bengal is concerned, it needs to be improved. The way complaints of crude bombs being manufactured are coming in, it is a subject matter of very serious concern," Singh said earlier in the day.
