Former militant killed for giving land for cell phone tower


Srinagar, May 27 (IANS): Separatist guerrillas on Tuesday shot dead a former militant, who rented land for a mobile phone tower in a village in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district, police said.

The assailants stormed into the home of Ghulam Hassan Dar in Dooru village near Sopore town on Tuesday evening and gunned him down, a senior police officer told IANS.

"Militants fired at Dar from close range. He died on the spot," the officer said.

Dar had rented land to a mobile phone company for a tower.

Guerrillas on Monday killed a local and injured two others in Sopore town after they fired at a shop where BSNL SIM cards were being sold.

Guerrillas have threatened all cell phone companies to shut their businesses in Sopore town after police recovered a high powered communication equipment installed by the guerrillas on a mobile phone tower in Badami Bagh area of the town.
