Heat wave: More than 1100 die in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana

New Delhi, May 27 (NDTV): The relentless heat wave sweeping through Andhra Pradesh and Telangana has claimed over 1,100 lives. Around 20 people have died elsewhere in the country, reported news agency Press Trust of India.

Andhra Pradesh, which has been bearing the brunt of the heat wave over the last 10 days, has witnessed the maximum deaths -- 852. The number of deaths in Telangana is 269.

Some parts of the two states may get a brief respite tomorrow, with the meteorological office predicting rain and thundershowers. But the monsoon is still far away -- the first showers expected to drench the Kerala coast by the end of this month.

"In Andhra Pradesh, severe heat wave is expected till tomorrow. After that, there would be a reduction in temperature because of change in wind direction from north-west to west," said an official from the met office in Hyderabad.

Delhi recorded 45 degrees Celsius -- 0.5 degrees less than yesterday, which was the hottest day so far this season.

Sweltering conditions also prevailed in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal -- with temperature hovering around 45 degrees Celsius in most places.

Seven deaths were reported from Gujarat, all in Ahmedabad, according to PTI.

The scorching weather claimed 104 lives in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh alone, Special Commissioner for Disaster Management Tulsi Rani told PTI.

"The state government has taken up education programmes through television and other media asking people not to venture outside without a cap, to drink water and take other measures," she said. "We have also requested NGOs and government organisations to open up drinking water camps so that water will be readily available for all the people in the towns."

In Telangana, Nalgonda district recorded the highest number of deaths -- 73. Khammam witnessed 60 deaths, Mahabubnagar 32, Medak 26, Karimnagar and Adilabad district 22 each.

Ridiculous high figure. Even if they lie it should not be a blatant lie. Have they got those 1100 dead bodies postmortem? Farmers suicide count was not even 100. Half of them might have ran to neighbouring states i'm sure.

Guess after going to Dubai you have become insane.. Hope you are aware what is heat wave???

Hope you are also aware that these are natural phenomenon, which is beyond the control of any goverment in the any part of the world, the most people died are aged people, whose body cannot take the hot weather.

Dont blame Modi for each and everything including if your family has constipation.. You are responsible for your own Health, goverment can provide us the neccessities to improve your health..

This is what happens if people learn from IIN and then go to Dubai

There is something called as SAFETY MEASURES !!! I hope u are well aware of EHS ( Environment Health & Safety) and its implemented all over the countries ! In gulf labours are not allowed to work between 12pm-3pm and fluids are provided continuously for labours to avoid dehydration...these are the FEW safety measures and there are LOTs many !!
This is what happens if u have HALF KNOWLEDGE about SAFETY MEASURES !!!
Forget IIN , wondering who gave u this title THE GURU. !! Self implicated title ?

Mind u that UAE is much more hotter ,humid and all the precautionary measures are taken here by the GOVT to avoid such happenings ...Why can't Govt of India start doing this ?
Simply saying its a natural process and we can't avoid it, is not the solution. Its an excuse !

Husain, that's the difference between education and the lack of it. In our country many are not even aware of dehydration and it's effects. When such natural calamities can be foreseen, the government should educate the public and provide at least clean drinking water and shelter to those who are exposed to heat stress. There are hotter places than Andra Pradesh in the Arabian dessert where fatalities due to heat stress are very rare.

    @Guru,

Most of the people dead are poor..who do not have basic things like proper shelter and food..Now who is responsible for that..1100 people dying is not a small issue...both state and central government have to come up with some solution at least by next year.Only foreign tours are not enough.

You people always tell half truth as per the report from BR Meena "most of them were working and were exposed to the heat. Dehydration and heat stroke caused the deaths'

Tomorrow if you die during working and due to Natural calamities, will you blame Govt or your lack of knowledge?????

    One more IIN Graduate

Don't trust Modi more than your God, he cannot correct the global warming alone we all should join hands and fight it out, stop thinking small and start it big, make people aware about global warming effects and its harm and also educate people around you not to produce children to experience this kind of climate change as this irreversible.

I have a friend from Andra in my office who is telling there are some deaths reported due to extreme heat. But all deaths are not due to sun stroke. People are reporting natural death as death due to sun stroke just to get compensation from Government.
