Bengal man accidentally hit by cricket bat, dies

Kolkata, May 27 (IANS): In a freak accident a 58-year-old man was killed after being accidentally hit by a cricket bat in West Bengal's East Midnapore district, police said on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Bhagwanpur block in the district, some 180 km from Kolkata.

According to police, Shahshank Manna was watching a cricket match between local children when the bat slipped out of the batsman's hand and hit him on the head.

"Prime facie, it appears the batsman's hands were sweaty and while he attempted a shot, the bat slipped out his hand and landed directly on Manna's head. Bleeding profusely, he was taken to a hospital where the doctors declared him dead. We have registered a case of unnatural death," an officer of Bhagwanpur police station said.

Earlier in April, former Bengal Under-19 captain Ankit Keshri was injured, and later died, after colliding with a team mate during a cricket match.
