Yaduveer crowned titular head of former Mysuru royal family

Updated

Mysuru, May 28 (IANS): Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja, the 23-year-old adopted heir to the Wodeyar dynasty, was on Thursday crowned the 27th king of the erstwhile kingdom of Mysuru.

The grand coronation took place in the hallowed precincts (Kalyana Mantap) of Durbar Hall at the Amba Vilas Palace in the city of palaces, about 150 km from Bengaluru.

In attendance were members of the extended royal family, about 1,000 special invitees and pontiffs from the region, amid tight security.

Clad in royal attire of cream silk robes (kurta-pyjama) and sporting a regal green turban, a bespectacled Yaduveer took oath in Kannada, while seated on a silver throne as the 27th titular head of the Wodeyar dynasty that was founded in 1399 by Raja Wodeyar.

"On the auspicious time (9:25-10:38 a.m.) on Dashmi (10th day of the HIndu lunar month), the royal dynasty head priest (dharmadhikari) Janardhana Iyengar anointed Yaduveer as the new head of the erstwhile Hindu kingdom," a palace official told IANS.

Queen Pramoda Devi, who adopted Yaduveer as a son to carry on the royal lineage, his biological parents (Tripura Sundara Devi and Swarup Anand Gopalraj Urs), younger sisters of late king Srikantadata Wodeyar and scores of relatives graced the occasion and blessed Yaduveer amid chanting of vedic hymns and Carnatic music tunes.

Prominent among those who witnessed the ceremony was the scion's fiancee Trishika Kumari Singh.

"Yaduveer will now onwards look after activities of the royal palaces here and in Bengaluru, discharge duties of a prince and conduct the 10-day world famous Dasara festival in mid-October," the official said.

The last coronation of the erstwhile Mysuru king was of Srikantadatta on October 16, 1974.

After the hour-long ceremony, Yaduveer was blessed by about 40 priests and seers and greeted by scores of VIPs, including former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda, state cabinet ministers Srinivas Prasad, R.V. Deshpande, K.J. George and Roshan Baig, the BJP's Lok Sabha member from Mysore Pratap Simha, and Congress lawmaker from Bengaluru assembly segment, Harris.

Common people from the state's cultural capital as also tourists were not allowed into the spruced-up palace to witness the special event due to space and security constraints.

"We had set up four giant screens in the palace grounds to relay the function live to the people outside, while local news channels had telecast it live across the state," the official noted.

Following a lavish and sumptuous lunch and rest, Yaduveer went around the dozen temples across the palace, riding a caparisoned elephant in a procession.

"He will appear in the illuminated palace balcony later in the evening to give audience to the public with his foster mother (Pramoda)," the official added.

State Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who hails from the region, was conspicuously absent, though the ruling party's state unit president G. Parameshwara was present along with his family members as wereformer state cricketers Brijesh Patel and Anil Kumble.

Srikantadatta passed away in Bengaluru on December 8, 2013, at the age of 60.

Yaduveer is the grandson of late princess Gayathri Devi, the eldest sister of Srikantadatta and eldest daughter of the last maharaja (king) Jayachamarajendra Wodeyar.

The scion has graduated in English and Economics from Boston University in the US.

It is nice to see a new Maharaja of Mysore being crowned. These are necessary ornaments for any country which have to remain for the tradition and richness of our country. Just like in England where the Queen adds such a lot of class and royalty combined with her dignity making everyone to relish in the age old tradition. We too need such glory and color and show our country's vibrant character.
One hopes that the young and new Maharaja will rise to the occasion and successfully be a joy to behold. Let us all pray for his success.

Celebrations all around as the king is on the throne. It is a custom to appoint a proper person to the post. No need for any kind of misunderstandings. They are obeying the laws of the country and living like the general public. Good to see them happy.

The King of Mysore or any other parts of India is an honor and due respect to them.
Everyone knows that, the Government of India abolished the princely system. India is now Republic of India (democratic secular country)
What about the Nawabs in India? For instance Nawab of Pataudi (present Saif Ali Khan). They are still rich and have fun out of their own money and the government is not looking after their elegant life style. Whoever has money (importantly Files Income Tax returns) can have fun and who can stop?

27th king of the Wodeyar dynasty.
From 1399 – 2015 Wodeyar dynasty should have had a great transformation but coronation ceremony has taken place in accordance with age old traditions and the rituals. Indian culture is great & beautiful.

Best wishes to the modern King.

Indian constitution we have adopted, gives right to people to elect and their KING or rep democractically!.. All these various kings were annexed to our prliament by great sardar patel!.. the nawabs, nizam, pataudis, rajas were all reduced to mere paper tigers!... Vijayanagaram and Mysore were one of the best ruled Praantyas in recent time.. they stopped Moguls onslaught and gave people friendly ruling!... hence this region is typically educated, progressive and without any poverty!... just look at career graph of Sir M Viswearayya or Diwan Mirza ismail who worked for mysore kings!... compare the poverty in Bidar, bijapur, hyderabad karnataka and aurangabad region, which had Bahamanis, adilshahis, mogul aurangzebs,Nizams who were fighting each other and took help from Sikhs/marathas to win over one another!....

when people wanted independence from all such colonila, mogul, and kingdom rulers, we chose to go democratic way! even British Moarchy is represenational state head and Parliament is supreme with Queen to have power just to advise!... but the true Islam, which says, no kIng or queen, and Only god is supreme, still reel under al saud , and rest of the kingly families, who on their own, demolish mecca places to build billion dollar hotels and hospitality industry on very same holy places, "Ancient mountains have been flattened" That's where perhaps Mohammed received the revelations from Allah!!! "The Makkah Hilton is built over the house of Abu Bakr, the closest companion of the prophet and the first caliph" Seculars read this!.. Khadija's place is demolished to build toilets.. The dominant structure in mecca is not the Sacred Mosque. It is the obnoxious Makkah Royal Clock Tower hotel a world’s tallest buildings.

Jis din, yahan DEMOCRACY hogi, us din real peace hoga, aur prospertiy bhi!... dekhenge ... kitan Deen aur Imaan se kaam lenge saudi ke king!
