Indian-origin restaurant owners sentenced for tax evasion

Wellington, May 28 (IANS): A new Zealand court on Thursday sentenced Indian-origin restaurant owners to eight months' home detention over four charges of tax evasion.

Taruun and Shetall Khurana, who own the "Indian Kitchen" restaurant in Howick, an eastern suburb of Auckland, did not declare more than 1 million New Zealand dollars ($724,665) in cash sales over a six-year period, the New Zealand Herald reported.

"These people did not declare a large number of their cash sales and under-reported the real amount of wages they paid staff. This was all done for their personal benefit," said an official.
