Mangaluru: 'Dhum Idre Dhum Bidi' walkathon marks World No Tobacco Day

Mangaluru, Jun 1: World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on May 31. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. Mangalore Institute of Oncology, 92.7 BIGFM, Mangalore City Traffic Police and Lions Club Mangaluru jointly initiated a walkathon on Sunday May 31 to spread the message of this day.

Dr Jalaluddin Akbar, managing director of Mangalore Institute of Oncology, Lions district governor H S Manjunath Murthy, Lion governor for next year Kavita Shastry, Lions Club PRO Taranath Shetty Bolar, traffic ACP Udaya Nayak, Durga Das, PRO of MIO RJ Errol from 92.7 BIG fm were present, along with a large crowd.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Jalaluddin Akbar said, "It is not very tough to quit smoking if you have a strong will power to do so. It is always better if you have control over smoking habit. I thank each and everyone who have gathered here in large numbers to support this cause."

Lion Manjunath said, "It is a known fact that a large number of deaths happens due to consumption of tobacco. It is high time to understand that smoking is not a cool habit and life is larger than smoking."

Traffic ACP Udaya Nayak Said "I am happy to see the support for this initiative. Make 'Dhum Idre Dhum Bidi' as the mantra of your life."

The walkathon began from Mangalore Institute of Oncology Hospital, and passed via Kankanady and reached Jyothi circle (Ambedkar circle).

Certificates were handed over to the two candidates who accepted the challenge by 92.7 Big FM, 'Dhum Idre Dhum Bidi' to abstain from smoking for 72 hours. Many participants failed to complete the 72 hours. Sushan and Ashith succeeded and they received the certcifates from 92.7 Big FM.

A large dummy cigarette was crushed at Ambedkar circle to signify the complete annihilation of cigarette from the world.

Rj Errol, Rj Rakshitha, Joel Rebello and Members of 92.7 BIG fm ,Doctors and staffs from Mangalore institute of Oncology, Lions Club members, Mangaluru city traffic police and people from various organizations were present.

Also, Dr Jalaluddin Akbar, Dr Krishna Prasad and Dr Dinesh Shet from Mangalore Institute of Oncology were on air on 92.7 BIG FM to spread the message about the problems caused by tobacco and they interacted with the listeners clarifying their queries.

    It is merely fun, exhibition and weekend get together.
    The serious signal and advice do not reach to the smokers (suiciders and murderers)
    As long as billionaires and health care longing for business nothing will be done
    in fact the support for tobacco is automatic control of population.
    if it is banned no one will die and alternative always can be sought.

    Congratulations...a very good awareness programme on this 'Worlds no tobacco day...sorry to say that the slogans 'DHUM IDDARE DHUM BIDI' and 'Please keep smoking, our planet is overcrowded' were not in good taste...
