Sullia, Jun 1: Gangadhar (28) from Haveri district, who was riding a motor bike, died on the night of Saturday May 30 after his vehicle met with an accident at Kadapal in Sampaje in the taluk. He was skilled in doing concrete floor polishing work, and lived in the town.

Kadapal has been witnessing a number of accidents. The spot where these accidents occur has become a highly accident-prone spot because of a narrow culvert standing there. Whereas a number of accidents which happened here have been minor in nature, four members of a single family had perished here in a recent accident.

Gangadhar, who was riding his motor bike towards Sullia from Sampaje, had overtaken a truck loaded with timber, immediately after which his vehicle hit the culvert. The person who was riding the pillion was also badly hurt. The motor bike was smashed in the accident, with only its wheels remaining largely unaffected.

Sampaje Nagarika Horata Samiti, expressing frustration at the failure of authorities in doing anything to avert repeated accidents at Kadapal, has warned of undertaking strong measures of protest if the needful is not done before June 5. The Samiti has said that accidents occur often because of the fact that the road suddenly narrows down at the spot where this particular culvert stands. There are no warning signs for vehicles approaching this spot. Representative of the Samiti, G K Hameed, said that the Samiti will resort to protest if the department continues to turn blind eye towards the issue.
