Udupi, June 1: The irregular allocation of the SC/ST housing fund and broadening of state highway in Parkala led to chaos at the general body meeting of the City Municipality Council, Udupi, held on Saturday May 30 at CMC Conference Hall, Udupi.

Prashant Amin, CMC member of Kola ward, submitted an appeal to the commissioner about the SC/ST housing fund and alleged that the CMC president P Yuvaraj has been using granted funds for only his Subrahmanya Nagar ward. The president then convinced him by clarifying the DC’s statements.

On the same issue, Satish Barkur said that there is no single grant approved to Bannanje ward. Other opposition councilors Dinkar Shetty and Yashpal Suvarna raised their voice against the welfare slum area. There are seven slum areas out of 35 wards but none have been officially declared slum areas.

T Manjunathaiah clarified that they have sent three proposals and Rs 30 lac amount has been released to the MLA fund for a special package for slum people.

One of the private commercial complexes has taken electricity connection without giving notice to the CMC and since five months they are using power from MESCOM but CMC officials have failed to identify this illegal act. Nearly Rs 27, 80, 000 is pending as dues.

Sunitha Nayak questioned the widening of Parkala state highway. The commissioner informed that Rs 2.58 lac has been deposited to CMC account but the DC instructed him to hand over a certain amount to the National Highway Development Commission.

Opposition party members pressurized immediate action and seized 32 unauthorized shops which are run by the CMC in Manipal. Senior opposition leader M R Pai and Ramesh Kanchan wasted session time by blaming each other along with a few other members.

“Big Bazaar management agreed to allow parking place for the public and now Diana Circle and space in front of Raj Tower has been cleared,” said T Manjunathaiah.

Water supply, tax collection, and other illegal building construction issues were also raised at the CMC meeting.

CMC president Amrithakrishnamoorthy was present at the meeting.
