Mangaluru: Row over hosting of smart city delegation - Mayor seeks enquiry

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 3: City mayor Jacintha Vijay Alfred has asked the government to conduct an enquiry into controversy surrounding the hosting of a delegation on smart city project that had came from USA to the city in March, source said.

"I was just orally informed by the city corporation commissioner about the visit of a delegation said to have been deputed by the central government. No additional information was given. In connection with the visit of this delegation, corporators had alleged at the meeting about misuse of government machinery in hosting the said delegation. On the face of it, this allegation appears to have substance. Therefore, the government has been asked to hold enquiry into this matter," she said.

Immediately after the holding of special budget session of the city corporation council here on March 24, a meeting chaired by the mayor had discussed issues relating to smart city project. It was informed that the city has been brought under a list of smart cities proposed to be developed as envisaged by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and that this meeting had been convened to conduct supplementary studies and send report to the Prime Minister. Alex Galafand and Shruti Ramaiah, said to be representatives of Bloomberg Philanthropies team, had been introduced as members of the delegation. The corporators had failed to provide supplementary information sought to the visiting delegation.

The issue had turned into a controversy in the coming days. A corporator had raised question to the commissioner about the visit of two members of this delegation and footing of bill towards providing facilities to its members.

The commissioner has already issued clarification on the subject. The mayor has now come up with another statement. The tussle between the corporators and commissioner at the city corporation here seems to be turning more complex, going by this development.

Sad and pathetic that Mangaloreans are not open for innovative concepts of smart city. Ego and communalism inhibits the outlook of educated in Nelyadi (NY) and those in power. God bless short-sighted Manga-luru to make it a place of monkeys and not internationals!!!

New ideas bring new thoughts and new spirits in any country, specially India where you need new blood with new energy to emerge in order to bring swift changes that will benefit the people. People are always resentful of any changes, specially when those changes come from the Foreign sources where the Foreign parties do not want to sow any seed of corruption or any political influences. This is a common tendency in almost every country including China.

People in higher authority always want to suppress new ideas because many of the projects entail new technology and new set of ideas which many people are not easy to accept because of personal interests.

Let us at least be receptive to foreign ideas that might bring some long term benefits. Let us give some time to listen so that the foreign parties can narrate their proposals for timely and neutral considerations.

Please therefore extend your wholehearted support to Ms. Jacinta Alfred, our beloved new Mayor, and let the pathway of new proposals unfold with a view to provide a glimpse for further thought. Do not give up any new ideas because they are foreign. We are all part of the process of "GLOBALIZATION".

'smart city'. what a joke. The PM is always busy talking about creating public toilets. We have a six foot tall BJP MP from Mangalore representing one of the India’s top educational hub.
Where is the toilet project? Have you seen any toilets made? Can you find a toilet which can be really used by the women or general public?
Crores of Money is collected as stamp duty and registration at Mangalore Registrar office, but can you find clean chair to rest or a wash room to freshen Up?

It appears that the writer initiating this discussion under the caption “Row over hosting of smart city delegation - Mayor seeks enquiry” has put forward a set of flimsy and irrelevant points, blurring the true purpose this article seeks to achieve. No study in the world whether it is for a “smart city’’ or otherwise involving valuable human resources can be done without hosting the experts involved and footing their bills.

The prima facie purpose of the visit by our US guests is to possibly convert Mangaluru into a “smart city” is meant well, whether it is at the behest of our Honorable Prime Minister or anyone else seeking to enhance the quality of life of the citizens. In this context a smart city by definition (also smarter city) uses digital technologies or information and communication technologies (ICT) to enhance quality and performance of urban services, to reduce costs and resource consumption, and to engage more effectively and actively with its citizens.

So as one can conclude the end purpose is the common good of residents of Mangaluru. So I just cannot fathom why there is so much chatter and dissension from the corporators . My only guess the “future smart city of Mangaluru” is going to badly dent the personal finances of the corporators.

So in interest of the citizens I call upon our Honorable Mayor to take this decision “sua sponte”

BJP is a fr.... Govt. They give big speeches. Take public for a ride and do nothing. BJP said that they will make Delhi smart city. In Delhi BJP counselors in MCD take bribe of 2-4 lacs rupees and encouraging builders to construct unauthorised buildings and encroachment on public land. They have made living in Delhi a hell. No fresh air, no sun light. High pollution and every one is sick suffering from one disease or the other. There is no public transport from 1-4 PM and no public transport after 8 PM. Delhi is worst than remote village. Water supplied is dirty and polluted with sewer water. Modi ji has started swatch bharat abhiyan. Heaps of dirt can be seen all over Delhi roads and all sewer lines are blocked and dirty water BJPflowing on roads. Even on the eve of Republic Day parade, sewer lines of prominent place such as ITO were blocked and dirty sewer water flowing on roads. BJP is a liar party.
