Bantwal, Jun 3: A youth died on the spot in a collision between a lorry and a bike at Maddabarkata near Vagga here on Wednesday June 3.
The deceased has been identified as Dhanush (19), son of Nityananda Poojary and Sunita, residents of Pejattodi near Keddalike. He was a student of Vivekananda Polytechnic College, Puttur.
It is said that Dhanush along with his parents and other family members had been to a relative's house in Balepuni to attend a function. On the way back, Nityananda alighted at BC Road as he had to participate in a training programme in connection to gram panchayat elections, while his wife Sunita proceeded to Keddalike in the taxi. Their son Dhanush went separately in his bike.
Dhanush overtook the taxi in which his mother was travelling and went ahead. Near Barkata, a sand-laden lorry rammed into Dhanush's bike. By the time the locals came to the spot on hearing the sound of the collision, the lorry driver had already escaped. A critically injured Dhanush died on the spot due to heavy loss of blood.
Meanwhile, Dhanush's mother who was in the taxi noticed his bike while passing by that same spot. She stopped the taxi and got out to check, and much to her shock, found her son lying in a pool of blood.
The locals immediately informed the police and helped in shifting the body to Punjalkatte government hospital.
Dhanush was the only child of his parents. His father Nityanand Poojary is a resource person in the education department while his mother Sunita is a teacher at Ramakrishna high school in Puttur. His parents had recently bought him a new Pulsar bike. Dhanush was a talented student who had won the President's Medal in scouts.
Bantwal rural police have registered a case.
Organ donation
In a commendable gesture, despite the grief they are going through, Dhanush's parents decided to donate his eyes. The doctors of K S Hegde hospital performed the surgery till late night on Wednesday for this purpose.
Bantwal inspector K Beliappa, Bantwal traffic police inspector Chandrashekaraiah and local leaders visited the hospital.
