Focus more on farm sector, Deve Gowda tells prime minister

New Delhi, Jun 4 (DHNS): Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps to boost agriculture production and protect the interest of farmers.

Gowda, who called on Modi at latter’s 7, Race Course Road residence, held a discussion on various issues including agriculture sector, farmers’ problems and land acquisition. Modi, who has just completed a year in office, had invited Gowda for a chit-chat over a cup of tea.

Last week, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also met Modi.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Gowda said, “though the government has made strides in foreign policy and industry sector in its one year, it has lost its focus on agriculture sector. With farmers in distress due to crop loss, I suggested the PM to focus on their welfare”.

The prime minister promised that he would implement the Gujarat model in agriculture sector where farm produce increased 10 per cent every year when he was the chief minister, Gowda said.

Nice project

“Citing affairs of Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway developed by Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises (NICE), I have suggested the PM that the government should ensure that corporate houses do not make money at the cost of poor farmers", he said.

While demanding an audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of all projects under Public Private Partnership (PPP), Gowda urged the prime minister to protect the interest of farmers and pay high compensation to them while acquiring their land.

Good that he raised the compensation issue with the PM.Its true that when government wants to acquire the land no one can stop. But people can demand very high compensation. I think 3 crores per acre is reasonable amount, not haftey, though.

I have heard Mr. Modi's speech in English on many occasions. Why some people for nothing criticize him over English. Always talk sense and just to seek fun do not twist your tongue as you like. That is too bad.

That's great news ..but ask him to surrender all ill gotten and hoarded wealth by abusing power of his seat..
from the tim eof serving in PWD.. BDA on words the GOWDA has accumulated in billions ..
and all under temple floors. in Gold nuggets and property in the name of family..and money overseas..
    where is justice?
    why the blind eye..
With this LOOTED money he could have built 100 schools .. colleges .. build industrial parks and promote dgrowth and Economy instead of DEAD money in Gold.. for whom?
They preach what they do not practice...most of the so called NETAJIS are same..
so, young India should do background check: whose words mean what they do and speak and do..
with words and in actions..body language ..their friends circles association...etc.
we just need few dynamic scientists: doctors: engineers who are the best professionals..great leaders : dynamic: young fire brand..rest should all time to retire...
Karnataka state is blessed with great fertile land: water: human resource: agriculture: sea front etc.
so, all that is needed is quality..clean management only..
State of karnataka can be like Europe or Germany or Japan or USA. if planned and built well..
educate the people with 100% discipline and quality no compromise: work is worship:
use every inch of our land ..go vertical to save space ..but build the best construction as per international standards no less.
Infrastructure should be planned with mega nd master plans Garbage collection and recycling should be the ..and TOILETS habits ..education and management should be trained from kg..schools..
    Looks absolute Saint....

it is also necessary to reduce the number of Stomachs. the burgeoning population will put lot of pressure. The per capita land holdings will keep on reducing if all the farmers children take to agriculture. this would be a trap. Agriculture in such a background will be uneconomical. What is important is to increase the productivity of the land. If we have good rains it will give good output. if we start digging holes to bring out water to irrigate, the ground water levels will keep going down and down. in order to increase the agricultural output if we do agriculture (cereals like rice) on the same land 3 times in a year, the soil quality gets reduced.
