Shivamogga, Jun 6: In the aftermath of the death of high school student, Nandita Poojary, in Thirthahalli in the district on October 31 last year, disturbances had cropped up in the district, alleging that the girl had been abducted and poisoned, and that the culprits were being shielded by political leaders.
Relating to the case, the policemen on Friday June 5 filed charge sheet against 47 persons including former MLA, Araga Jnanendra.
Nandita, who was an eighth standard student, was found from near a hillock near Thirthahalli on October 29, 2014. She was sick. As she started vomitting uncontrollably on that evening, she was rushed to Manipal Hopsital, where she breathed her last after two days. This incident resulted in unrest in Thirthahalli taluk, as many had the impression that the girl had been poisoned, and the accused were being protected by political bigwigs. However, it later transpired that she had committed suicide.
Cases of protest, destruction of public and private property etc had occurred after her death. The administration had also promulgated prohibitory orders for 15 days for bringing the situation under control. Investigation was entrusted to criminal investigation department (CID), and the high court had later turned down the plea of the girl's father to order CBI inquiry. The CID had concluded that Nandita had ended life out of mental depression.
The charge sheet now filed accuses Araga Jnanendra and 46 others of disturbing peace, destruction of public property, damaging of polie vehicle, and violating prohibitory orders.
