Bengaluru: After Maggi, energy drinks, protein powders to come under scanner

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (RJP)

Bengaluru, Jun 7: Even as row over Maggi continues to grab headlines, Karnataka health minister U T Khadar has warned that energy drinks, tonics and other substances used for gaining and losing weight, and protein tablets and powders will also come under the scanner soon.

The health minister's warning comes after the food safety regulator Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) banned Maggi Noodles. It also warned that it would test other brands as well to ensure food safety in the country.

Khadar added that any food product, including protein powders and tonics, is found containing substances beyond permissible limits, then strict action will be taken as per the law against manufacturers.

The minister, who held a meeting with nutritionists in Bengaluru, said the department will test energy drink 'Red Bull' and protein powder products. "Our next target will be energy drink and protein powder manufacturers. If they (products) are found to be adulterated, action will be taken against them," he added. Action will be also taken against those units which indulge in artificially ripening of mangoes, he said.

Though two of the labs to which Maggi samples were sent have said that lead content was within permissible limits, the state government has banned Maggi Noodles in Karnataka temporarily following FSSAI order. Nestle India, the manufacturers of Maggi Noodles has been told to withdraw its stock from stores with immediate effect. If the product is sold anywhere, the health department will book cases against the store keeper.

Khadar also said that once the test results arrive from CAFTR Kolkata, a final call on the Maggi matter will be taken.

The directive of the central food safety regulator has been sent to the Nestle manufacturing units in Karnataka, added Khadar.

Criticising CFTRI Mysuru for not accepting the Maggi samples for tests, Khadar said, "This is an emergency situation. CFTRI should have kept aside its rules and helped us take a stand." Seven to eight other noodle products, including Top Ramen, Knorr, Sunfeast, have also been sent for testing.

    @ Raju,
I am sure if you want to travel to Dubai or at least Nepal you will not be able to do so. Your frustration shows in your words. Regards other working in abroad makes their living also contribute to Indian economy by NRI remittance which is much more than FDI investments in India. I don't blame who work in India, they are lucky in one way with living and earning by living with their family. However no one is slaves at present era and everyone has their rights. In Dubai we can go straight to police and complaint against someone who misbehaves against us or even scolds and no-matter whoever it is(Local or a foreigner ) but what you can do Raju? Will you be served at police station? They just kick you out! Simple human rights are not served in India. You can read human rights in books India not elsewhere. Crimes like Murders or Rapes are punished with death penalty in Gulf and what about Mumbai. Being Indian i have great respect for our Country and not for someone who is living there with arrogant. First let’s make our country safe, growing also leave ego from your mind then all will be fine. You will be out of your slavery you are living and you will not comment frustrated. Good luck to you!

Mr. UT Khadar, please check the cooking oil samples that are being sold as sunflower oil like sunola, suffola, etc. What is the content of sunflower oil & what is the percentage of cheap fillers like palmoline (palm oil) in it? What are the permissible limits prescribed by the government? This has not only killed the local coconut oil industry, but also the groundnut oil industry. Do they follow proper hygiene standards?

    Dear Sir
There is plenty of junk food now available in market, the coloring chemicals they use in these food to attract customers are cancel prone, it is proved in all the western laboratories, and also in soft drinks, colas full of slow poisons.
There was a highest sale of pepsi and coca cola in one rural place which was quite unexpected to the cola sales team.So they decided to visit and make media publicity by visiting that area and using this to promote sales. When they visited that place they came to know that farmers using the colas as pesticides to kill insects in their fields and farms. This story appeared in media few years before.
So Sir, if you are really willing to do something to safeguard the health of our citizens, please check all the junk food additives and put a ban if they violate the safety standards
Also they must be penalized heavily if they are responsible for killer deceases like cancer, diabetes etc
May Almighty bless you to carry on this noble cause and save the lives of millions of innocent people
I salute you and media like Daiji World for this campaign.

The way they have suddenly woke up to adulterations/fake claims on packed foods, looks like they will require an army of men and massive increase in infrastructure to check out on all the stuff available!!

Just check the way simple daily use 'buttermilk' and 'curds' are transported and stored in the hot summers!! By the time they reach the retailer they are actually 'technically' so sour that it is difficult to consume them, but customer is forced to consume them by paying exorbitant rates!!!

"CFTRI should have kept aside its rules and helped us take a stand."

A statement from a responsible minister?? What does he think of himself? Slowly, Khader is getting the kick of power.
He started with scaring and shouting at govt. hospital doctors at midnight raids.
Recently he was seen transferring and re posting a senior lady doctor. The way he made her stand and answer in a meeting while he was comfortably seated. Now he wants CFTRI should act as per his will!!

Sir, arrogance will take you nowhere.

It is good that Govt has become health conscious.
If punitive measures are taken in view of health hazards resulting from adulteration, then it is imperative that not only foreign brands but indigenous products should also be targeted.
Milk, Oil, spices, Veg, fruits like wise so many things are adulterated including, Medicine, wine, beer and liquor.
Slow poison is deceivingly entering into our bodies and destroying us.
But we are paying genuine hard earned money!

Now all comes under scanner and will wipe out one by one slowly.
Will encourage more of local products here after.
'Pelakai Gatti' first and foremost in the region will replaced with other artificial cakes.
By next x'mas season you will see people go on buying pelakai gatti instead of cakes..and even during different occasions.

Yoga now already approved in 164 countries. Do you have any trees of 'Jackfruit' we will take for a year's period.
