Seventh standard students to face exam to test learning capacity

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jun 9: The seventh standard students in the state are proposed to be put through another examination. First of these proposed annual eligibility examinations will be held during the first week of January, 2016, said minister for primary and secondary education, Kimmane Ratnakar.

These eligibility examinations will be held in all the five subjects of seventh standard, with 100 marks each. The minister said that these examinations aim at assessing the learning capacity of the students, and that there will not be any results like pass and fail for the students appearing for them.

'Eligibility examinations will be held for seventh standard students from both government and private schools. The education department is already making preparations for holding this examination. Information has already been sent to teachers,' he added.

The minister reasoned that the parents fail to assess the learning capacity of their children as of now, as the students directly pass examinations from first to tenth standard. 'We therefore propose to hold this eligibility examination at the seventh standard level. In case of students who fail to clear this examination, discussions will be held with their parents, and special classes will be conducted to help the students,' he explained.

The minister noted that eligibility examinations are held in foreign countries once every two years for medical professionals and teachers. He felt that such a system, if introduced in the country, will serve the people better. He revealed that the possibility of introducing such an eligibility examination for teachers is under the government's consideration.

When it comes to education, Finland is considered to be one of the most successful nations in the world.

According to one report "There are no inspectors, no exams until the age of 18, no school league tables, no private tuition industry, no school uniforms. Children address teachers by their first names. Even 15-year-olds do no more than 30 minutes' homework a night."

India does not rate above average in world standards.

India is doing everything that should have stopped decades ago. Indian excel in literacy, but yet to find the meaning of education.

If an adult can get on with life without exams, why should a child be forced to do so many exams? Exams destroy the self-esteem of children.

When will India wake up to the realisation that children have their rights too?

This move may indirectly burden the poor parents to send their children for tuitions where they are compelled to pay heavy tuition fee. It is better to have the same syllabus on all india level basis so that we all follow the same pattern in all states.

Simply over burden the students and damaging children's career. My time there is board exam for seventh.I have studied in convent school. the Nun head teacher making children fail in Sixth std. Because they want 100 percent pass in seventh std. because of this many poor student discontinued their school,
seventh STD is children play time. they go school and studying by the pressure . You cannot put more pressure on them.

If children poor in studies then what teachers can do? They make them fail from the beginning (1st std). Now a days the trend has changed. Even I had a science teacher he used to give highest marks 4 or 5 out of 50. I was studied in convent school to but science teacher was hindu.
