Mysuru, Jun 11: A youth, who expressed his love for a fellow employee and promised several times to marry her since the last four years, played truant on the wedding day. He took shelter under the guise of caste difference for absenting himself from the function.

The marriage of Subrahmanya (28), son of Malegowda and Aarati couple from Honnahalli in Chanmarajanagar talauk was fixed with a 22-year-old lady from Kyatanahalli in Heggada Devana Kote taluk in the district. The function was to be held at Buddhavihar at Ballal Circle here, where relatives of the girl had assembled with flowers and other arrangements. After waiting for four years at the marriage venue in vain, the family of the bride-to-be filed a complaint in women's police station here.

While Subrahmanya worked as supplier in a private hotel here, the girl discharged duty as cashier. Since the last four years, both were in love with each other. 'Subramanya was after me and pestered me agree to his proposal for marriage four years ago. When I rejected, he consumed poison and was hospitalized. His friends blackmailed and pressurized me to accept his advances. As there was no alternative, I agreed and began to love him. We lived for two years together in Kyatamaranahalli. He convinced me that he would marry me, and used me for satiating his sexual desires. He took away Rs 95,000 I had accumulated for buying a scooter. I also parted with gold ornaments worth one lac rupees as he wanted money to start a hotel,' the girl said.

When the girl insisted on marriage at an early date six months back, Subrahmanya said his family was not agreeable because of caste differences. Alerted by his change of behaviour, the woman contacted some organizations, and brought pressure on him. The youth agreed to marry her. On Wednesday, arrangements for marriage had been made under the supervision former city mayor, Purushotham. As the youth remained away, the marriage could not be conducted.

Purushotham said he had contacted Subrahmanya thrice over phone, and that the groom-to-be had agreed to marry this girl. 'We waited for him, but he went missing,' he explained.
