Udupi, Jun 12: The new building of the government polytechnic college was inaugurated at Shivalli, Manipal by R V Deshpande, Karnataka minister for higher education on Friday, June 12.

Addressing the gathering Deshpande said, "Being in a competitive world, students are deprived of fundamental facilities. The department has provided all the required equipment to all colleges. Rs 26 crore has been released to other labs. Competition is global and so students should be prepared to face it."

Deshpande urged the college management to shift all material by July 1. He assured them that he will release the required funds for smooth functioning of the college as soon as possible. There are 81 government polytechnic institutes and 172 centres in the state. He stressed on quality education to be provided.

"We must work hard and must possess general knowledge in order to be successful in life," Deshpande said.

Addressing the press on evaluation of ministers, Deshpande added, "The chief minister will not decide the working of any minister. It is upto the public to judge a true hard worker."

A proposal for a total of Rs 105 lac towards drainage, compound wall, interlocks and a new borewell for the college was submitted to Deshpande by the college management. The total budget for the entire project is Rs 8 crore.

The college has nearly 400 students studying, 25-30 staff working, and hostel facility for girls is provided. The polytechnic has four branches namely electronics and communication, mechanical, civil and computer science. It was approved in 2007-08 for Udupi district.

MLA of Udupi Pramodh Madhwaraj said, "Manipal is the hub of education. The government provides only the layout for the institute, but provides no basic requirement. Hence the state is lagging behind infrastructurally."

He urged Deshpande to release Rs 55 lac as early as possible for the immediate work on the college. He said that this institute should offer competition to private educational institutions.

Zilla Panchayat president Savitha S Kotian, Udupi CMC president P Yuvaraj, H U Talavar, director of TED, C P Ganapati, principal of the college and others were present.
