Kundapur: Mouth-watering jackfruit attracts large crowds at state-level fest

Daijiworld Media Network – Kundapur (EP)

Kundapur, Jun 14: The ravishing aroma of jackfruit filled Narayana Guru Kalyana Mantapa here on Saturday June 14, attracting large crowds as the state-level jackfruit fest began on a high note.

Jackfruit fest was given a new dimension in 2011. The fest was held in Brahmavar in 2013 and in Karkala in 2014 and now it has come to Kundapur. The two-day state-level fest was organized jointly by Agriculture and Horticulture Research Centre, Brahmavar, Udupi; Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project, Kundapur, horticulture and forest department, Udupi and Bharathiya Kisan Sangha, Udupi.

Jackfruit growers from different districts held exhibition of different varieties and preparations and sold various jackfruit products at the venue. Kadamba Marketing Sauharda Cooperative Bank prepared various products from the fruit and distributed to the farmers.

Varanasi Foundation of Adyanadka, Dakshina Kannada introduced different grafted breeds saplings to the farmers. Chandrakala and Rudrakshi varieties garnered special attention. While the fruit drew everyone's attention, its saplings were sold in large numbers.

Idli, dosa, mulka, kotte, kadabu, garigari, papad, chips, payasa, juice and ice creams prepared from jackfruit by self-help groups were an instant hit with the crowd.

There was also a meeting wherein experienced growers explained ways to grow the fruit in a profitable manner. The fest aimed to encourage jackfruit farming to make it an indivisible part of cultivation.

Jackfruit is basically from the Western Ghats. It is popular in Bangladesh, Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia.

There have been several experiments in jackfruit cultivation. Waxless jackfruit and small fruits known as Chandrakala have come into the market..

Jackfruits come in hard and soft varieties. In the past jackfruit products were a part and parcel of daily food. However, in modern days jackfruit has lost its value. Jackfruit trees are being sacrificed for furniture. The state-level fest is being held to make people realize the value of the fruit and encourage farmers to grow it more and making it a profitable business.

    At last..
    Great beginning..
Process the fruit very well..let every bit be put to good use.
there is a global demand ...
pack it well ..great labeling with nutritious values: date of mfg and expiry:
Let there be lab tests .and then market globally.
Just the jack fruit pap pads can earn in millions of dollars.
various products: spice added.. pickles: steamed: fired: In brine:
    dried :
so, let CFTRI: and other food labs start working with entrepreneurs..
    great export opportunity..
while generating employment and encourage farmers to grow more jackfruit plantation.

No doubt jack fruit is mouth watering seasonal special fruit. Three are many varieties with different taste. But like other fruits it has to be taken on empty stomach with 2 hours gap before and after taking food to avoid indigestion and stomach pain.

    Jamal..

Heard once a man taken 'Jackfruit' to a Gulf.
Arabs never seen a big different fruit in a lifetime.
While in a airport..customs officials informed to a bangla deshi who stand nearby..how to open the same...as something hidden inside.
With his smartness..bangladeshi..bring the big knife..and given a big blow.
Due to big blow..'white inflow (mayana) all spreaded to customs officials..clothes and nearby.
It's astonished him the most..and thrown jack fruit into the basket.
That's the reason people inform to enjoy all fruits of the life.
It's really happened...even they didnt' seen even coconut.

How many varieties of food items in our India.
God as provided everything at one place.
Every place is having different foods to contribute..have there own unique.
That's the reason India called a 'God's Country'.

We not depend wholly on only 'Beef Meat'..which is excluded on our part.

    Don't show to the westerners.
Immediately they barge it..and ask for royalty..as fruit as of there own.

Pelkaida Gatti..will replace in place of cakes....
KFC Chicken will replaced with 'Rava Fried Chicken.
Maggie Noodles will out from market..and replaced with 'Semiyaa'.
Burgers will be banned..and take over by Jumbo Vad-Pav.
Donuts..kept aside..and dominate by Medu Vada..
Pizza will be replaced by 'Utthapam'.
    - French Roti..will replace with Roti of Kori Roti.
    - Five Star will be replaced with roadside 'Dhaba'.

Need good strategy to deal with the same.

gm is right - Brazil has jack fruit trees everywhere. I had reserved some jack fruit preparations for a visiting relative who laughed out at my concern because there are no takers for this fruit in that place he says.

However, we feasted on 'Kaka' fruit he brought and are still recalling its lovely taste even at the mention of its name !
