President condoles deaths in Punjab gas tragedy


New Delhi, June 14 (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday condoled the deaths in a gas leak in Punjab's Ludhiana district.

At least six people were killed and over 100 hospitalised due to ammonia gas leak from a tanker on the outskirts of Ludhiana industrial town late on Friday, police said.

In his message to Punjab Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki, Mukherjee said: "I am saddened to learn about the gas leak tragedy in Punjab's Ludhiana district on Friday night in which several people lost their lives and a large number are hospitalised."

"I am sure the state government and other agencies are providing all possible aid to those affected by the gas leak as well as to the bereaved families," he said.

He also conveyed his prayers for the speedy recovery of those hospitalised and condolences to the families of the deceased, said a Rashtrapati Bhavan statement.
