Udupi, Jun 15: Derick Mascarenhas of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Kolalgiri was unanimously elected president of Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) of the Udupi diocesan central committee for the year 2015-16 on Sunday June 14 at Bishop’s House, Udupi.
Prior to the oath-taking of the new office-bearers, the Eucharistic was celebrated with the chief celebrant Fr Charles Menezes, YCS national official along with Fr Edwin D'Souza, director of Diocesan Youths.
After the mass Sharan, YCS national secretary shared her views, after which ice-breaker games were conducted. Fr Reginald Pinto of Sampada, diocese of Udupi conducted group discussions on the basis of the article written by Dr Norbert Lobo in Suvaad of Moodubelle church published during the golden jubilee celebrations of ICYM Moodubelle unit.
Fr Edwin D’Souza announced the new office-bearers for the year 2015-16. The occasion was presided by Msgr Dr Baptist Menezes, vicar general of Udupi diocese. Anthony Miranda, president of Kanajar Welfare Association was the chief guest. Fr Edwin D'Souza, Fr Royston Fernandes, convener of ICYM Udupi deanery, Leslie Aroza, former convener of Diocesan Youth, Walter D’Souza, animator of Diocesan Youths and office-bearers of ICYM were present on the dais.
Waylon Machado, president of ICYM Udupi diocese welcomed the gathering and spoke about his experience as a president during the past year. Anthony Miranda in his address said that ICYM is a source of youth development and growth. "Everyone has talent but we need to put it to good use in order to grow," he said.
Loyal D’Souza read out the annual report. Neeraj Saldahna placed the statement of accounts for the year. The past officials as well as the present elected officials were honoured by Fr Baptist Menezes. Those who were outstation in other parts of India were also honoured in absentia.
The new office-bearers then took the oath.
In his presidential address, Fr Baptist Menezes gave three tips to the youths for a successful life - control over one's behaviour and character, building a good relationship with friend, neighbours etc, and, belief in oneself. He appreciated Fr Edwin for his non-stop efforts to lead the diocesan youth commission.
Newly-elected president Derick Mascarenhas proposed the vote of thanks and gave a beautiful message on being elected as the new ICYM Udupi president. Elson D’Souza Hirgan compered the programme.
