Karwar-Bengaluru Express derails near Yedakumari, service disrupted

Mangaluru, Jun 15: Kannur/Karwar-Bengaluru Express train number 16518 hit a boulder that had fallen on the track at around 2.10 am on Monday June 15. As a result, two engines and an unreserved coach following them, were derailed between Shirivagilu and Yadakumari stations. No casualties or injuries were reported.

The fact that a boulder had got deposited on the track went unnoticed by the train driver. As a result, the train pushed the boulder for some distance before two engines and a compartment derailed.

The train, which got stranded, disrupted traffic on this line. It was later brought back to Subrahmanya Road station. The passengers, in the meanwhile, had to go through the ordeal of having to go without any food and other services as this station could not cater to so many passengers. This train was brought back to the city central station from Subrahmanya Road later and stands diverted via Kannur, Shoranur, Palakkad, Erode and Salem. The train left the central station here at 9.30 am on Monday.

As a result, the train number 16517/16523 which had left Yeshwantpur on June 14, cut short its journey at Sakleshpur. This train was partially cancelled between Sakleshpur and Kannur/Karwar on June 15. Arrangements were made to transport passengers of this train by buses to the city/Karwar.

The service of train number 16515 Yeshwantpur-Karwar Express scheduled to leave Yeshwantpur on June 15 stands cancelled, a press release of Southern Railway said.

    I was on this train when this incident happened. Really appreciate the driver's presence of mind in controlling the train at right time. We all had miraculous escape. Terrain is so tough that only expert loco pilots only can handle situations like this. This is the only grace.

    Things, arrangements followed after this incident were really pathetic. Railway department, Subrahmanya station staff, police, local administration should come forward and support the people who are effected.

    People who opt this train are elderly people, senior citizens, pregnant ladies, family with small kids, people who are having problem with bus journey, poor people, other than Tourists visiting Subrahmanya.

    There was no proper communication, no follow-ups, no food/water facility. Even after reaching Mangalore train didn't go to Mangalore city, stopped at Kankanady junction instead. Food, tea/coffee, water was not available there for thousand odd people. With Shiradi ghat closed, Charmadi ghat blocked, Bisile ghat unpredictable, Madikeri ghat time consuming we opted same train journey to bangalore via calicut, shornur, palghat, erode, kuppam covering Kerala, Tamilnadu, Andhra... reached bangalore at 1.30 AM mid night. 30 odd hour train journey.

    People of other state can reach Bangalore super fast and easily. Almost can go to their native every weekend.

    But for people of coastal Karnataka, reaching their capital city is tedious task, road, train, air whatever means.

    Politicians wake up. Stop asking vote by making fake promises. Learn from neighboring states like Kerala and Tamilnadu and act fast.

    NCMPrabhu, Mysore: You have blamed the Train driver for this accident. You read today,s TIMES OF INDIA, MANGALORE EDITION, PAGE 3. The train driver was Mr. Shivaraman and it was his presence of mind that saved the major accident on applying emergency brakes. During the rain season which rains heavily in the Shiradi and Yedakumeri ghat areas, boulders do fall on the track. The train goes slow, with two engines, takes two and hours to cover the ghat distance of 45 kms between Subramanya Road Station and Sakelshpur Station. It was his presence of mind that saved the lives of the people and the same driver's presence of mind had averted a major accident two years ago on this route when he had noticed broken track and had applied emergency brakes.

    In the year 1994, on July 13, I was travelling to Mysore but train had to return to Mangalore from Subramanya station that night due to landslide on the ghat. While returning , we had covered about 10 kms from from Subramanya Station on the return journey to Mangalore and it was raining heavily, as the train was moving, landslide occurred suddenly and mud from the sides fell on the tracks. The train driver who was experienced had applied emergency brakes and saved all the passengers without derailment. The train driver was a experienced Tamilian(name not known) and Guards name was Mr. Akbar.
    I have made more than 75 trips on this route on the way to Bangalorre or Mysore. It is easy to blame others but let us understand the real situation where the train Drivers face. No sensible persons do not do accidents knowingly. Remember, they too are human beings and have families and concerned about their lives too. With all this, Indian Railway network is still good and not bad. We criticize others but let us have understanding to appreciate the goodness in others. JAI HIND.

    Train derails, Shiradi Ghat closed, Charmadi Ghat Traffic Jam & vehicle movement totally disrupted. Our authorities are in deep slumber. Business and tourism badly effected apart from personal inconvenience to thousand of commuters.God save those commuters traveling between Bangaluru and Mangalure.

    Dear Ravindra,

    Who built Charmadi, Shiradi & Agumbe Ghats. Who gave us well connected railway net work all over India? Why we failed miserably to maintain the Ghats & to run the trains efficiently ? Do we need 5 months to repair 30 KM of Shiradi Ghat with about RS.150 crores. Whose money it is spent year after year? And the worst thing is that the Shiradi Ghat is still not yet ready to travel.

    I think Mr.Jacob Mendonsa, Shankerpura/Bangalore has built Charmadi, Shiradi & Agumbe Ghats. He only gave us well connected railway net work all over India.

    This is due to the fault of the driver.Quality of the drivers has gone down due to reservations,Gone are the days when most of the drivers in the south were frm the Angloindian community,it was more safer then and those drivers used to take care of of the trains as their own.

    When there is demand for more trains on this route due to
    shiradi ghat closure this is really a bad news. The railways should be very vigilant and take preventive measures to usher in a hassle free travel to the passengers and introduce more trains.
