Mangaluru, Jun 16: A recently married woman has filed a complaint of dowry harassment by way of physical and mental torture in Suratkal police station. She has named her husband and mother-in-law as tormentors in her complaint.

In her complaint, Chandrika from Kulai said that she has been threatened with murder if she fails to bring additional dowry of five lac rupees.

Chandrika's marriage with Nagaraj from Shivamogga was performed on January 26 this year at Kulai. Reportedly, dowry in the form of two lac rupees in cash apart from gold and silver ornaments had been gifted at the time of the marriage.

It is said that after taking Chandrika to his home in Shimoga, Nagaraj inflicted mental torture on her by not allowing her to visit her parents, and not even permitting her to speak to her family members. At last, Chandrika succeeded in visiting her home, and returned to Shivamogga on June 1. 'I was stopped by my mother-in-law, Kusuma, from entering the house. She slammed the door on my face, telling me that I have to bring additional dowry of five lac rupees in cash, failing which I would not be allowed entry into the house,' she said in the complaint.

Chandrika, frustrated at this development, returned to her hometown and filed police complaint.
