Karkala, Jun 17: After a prolonged effort, policemen from Hebri station succeeded in arresting a person named Kiran, who is said to have been linked to the death of Poornima, owner of a beauty parlour in Hebri, who committed suicide on April 20 this year.
Police personnel of Hebri station, who had been looking for Kiran since sometime, succeeded in finding him from Aurangabad in Maharashtra with the assistance of police personnel from that state on June 14. He has been brought to Hebri police station for further action.
It is said that Kiran, who operated a fruits stall at Hebri, had a thriving relationship with Poornima. Making use of his proximity and friendship with Poornima, he succeeded in convincing her to part with gold ornaments against which he raised loan from a bank. It is said that he also used to pester her for more money. He had illicit relationship with her, and was blackmailing her on this count, it is said.
Frustrated by this harassment, and fearing loss of image and respect, Poornima had hanged herself on April 20 night, leaving behind husband and two children. In her death note, she said that she was forced to commit suicide because of tremendous mental pressure and harassment caused by Kiran. Based on these details, the policemen had been making efforts to find his whereabouts and take him into custody since the last one and half months.
During questioning, Kiran revealed that after Poornima ended her life, he went to Udupi railway station by his motor bike, and then to Kerala. From there, he went to Hyderabad and Chennai before reaching Aurangabad, he explained. The fact that Kiran had borrowed Rs 5,000 from a friend in Kerala, and then kept contacting friends and borrowing money through different sources, helped policemen to track his movements.
The police team comprising assistant sub-inspector,Gaurishankar and head constable, Laxman, succeeded in arresting the accused, working under the directions of district superintendent of police, Annamalai, deputy superintendent of police, Vinay S Nayak, and police circle inspector, D K Naykar.
