Bengaluru, Jun 17: Students belonging to other backward classes wishing to pursue higher studies abroad will be provided with scholarships of Rs 10 lakh each per year for 100 students in 2015-16.

The scholarships named after former chief minister D Devaraj Urs, whose birth centenary celebrations falls this year, would be given to students studying post-graduation (two-year period) and Ph.D. (three-year) courses abroad.

Students belonging to category 1, 2A, 3A, and 3B are eligible and the annual income limit should not exceed is Rs six lakh. Candidates should be below 35 years of age and secured 60 per cent marks.

Scholarships would be given to 24 students in the category 1, 46 students in the category 2A, 14 students in the category 3A, and 16 students in the category 3B, Minister for Social Welfare H Anjaneya told reporters in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

Under the D Devaraj Urs Pratibha Puraskara programme, he said 2500 students, who have scored 90 per cent marks and belonging to OBC category, would be felicitated and cash prize would be given.

A total of 1000 SSLC students (Rs 1000 each), 500 PUC students (Rs 15,000 each), 500 degree students (Rs 20,000 each), 500 post-graduate students (Rs 25,000 each) would be given.

The annual income is limited to Rs 2.5 lakh for category I and Rs one lakh for rest of the categories, he said.
