Kundapur: Akshata death - Huge protest held in Byndoor, police given deadline

Silvester D'Souza
Daijiworld Media Network - Kundapur

Kundapur, Jun 18: Hundreds of students supported by local leaders and the general public filled the streets of Byndoor on Thursday June 18, in protest against the suspicious death of a 17-year-old Akshata Devadiga on Wednesday June 17.

Akshata, daughter of Babu and Radha Devadiga, was found dead near a temple at Ottinene near Byndoor on Wednesday evening. It is suspected that she was strangled to death while walking home from college.

On Thursday morning, hundreds of students of Byndoor Junior College where Akshata was studying in second PU (science) gathered near Byndoor circle demanding justice.

Supported by local political leaders, the protestors shouted slogans and blocked the road all morning. All shops in Byndoor remained closed in support of the protest. Several local women also joined in.

The police deployed heavy security at the spot to prevent untoward incidents.

As the agitation grew stronger, SP Annamalai arrived at the spot and tried to console the protestors. He urged them not to block the roads and sought their cooperation.

The protestors pointed out that last year when young Ratna Kottary was found dead in a similar way near Byndoor, the then SP Boraligaiah had promised to solve the case, but he did not succeed. They expressed fears that in Akshata's case too, the culprits would manage to evade law.

They demanded fair and speedy probe into Akshata's death without any political interference or influence.

The SP assured that a thorough investigation would be done by the Udupi police and appealed to the protestors to give the police three days' time. The protestors agreed, but warned that if the case does not see any significant development in three days, they would intensify their protest.

"We have given the police three days' time, and if we do not get justice we will again protest," said local leader Deepak Kumar Shetty.

Following the assurance by the SP, the protestors dispersed and the roads were cleared.

IGP visits crime spot

Meanwhile, IGP Amrit Paul on Thursday visited the spot where the girl's body was found. He was accompanied by SP Annamalai and other higher police officials.

Speaking to media persons, IGP Paul said, "We have formed two teams to investigate the case. We are waiting for the medical report. The investigation is under progress and we have already gathered some clues."

When asked about Ratna Kottary case, he said, "The medical report stated that she had a natural death. The exact cause is not known and investigation is still going on."

Many times warned!!! young girls please dont walk alone, walk in groups. Why these people are not listening? if it is a forest why she is not waiting on the highway until some one joins her? I saw many places for example in kalyanpur udupi, mangalore young children walk to the school in groups. this is good no one will attack you. Hereafter please girls if you have to pass through a forest or a jungle or lonely place wait for someone to give you company, otherwise if parents or siblings are free at home call them to join you fore safety. think this is the only gang who was responsible for sowjanya also. Please try to trace this gang. After anything happens if we protest no use at all. our dead sister will not come back.

We cannot believe 100% in postmortem report. Government doctors can also be bribed. Some Indian courts and judges are bought for price by politicians and rich. Postmortem should be done in two places in suspicious cases. But who will come to favor poor parents who lost their child in this situation. Judges will transfer, police will transfer if they investigate rightly.

Time and again, I have come across so many comments, where people say NRIs who studied here, go and work for other countries and do slavery there and what can we expect from them.

First and foremost, I want to say, we have acute unemployment here. The people who go outside are the ones who take the risk, they are hard working and generally of above average skill, hence they are kept there, even with lot of competition from other country people. These people are sending foreign exchange and they keep the light burning in their households back home.

They love their country like all Indians here. If there is any problem, people say they are not available, but, with so much population, why do we need them for any agitation ?

I thank NRIs, since they are there, our many people could get employment here. Please do not comment adversely on them without knowing the facts.

I do agree that some of us use this platform to praise or criticize political party. There is no harm, if healthy argument takes place through media. Some times topic itself gives scope / opportunity to praise or criticize some particular political party.

This is very sad / tragic incident, where only your good words can help victims families / friends. I appreciate your first comment. Second comment was not necessary for this incident. We do not know who killed our sister and which party he / they belongs to.
