Husband jumps into well to save wife, dies


Jun 18, (Emirates 247): A man died while trying to save his wife, who had jumped into a well. The couple were involved in an argument and sudeenly the woman threw her 7-month-old child before jumping into the well. The woman was saved, while the man ended up losing his life, ‘Gossip C Lanka’ reported.

The victim has been identified as, Vadivel Raja, aged 29 and a father of one.

At the post mortem inquiry held before the coroner of Koralaya area, Lawrence Hettiarachchi, the victim’s wife, Ashok Subashini (20) giving evidence stated that the deceased was her husband and they came to work on the estate two years before having worked at the Bogawantalawa estate and since recently, her

husband had been arguing with her saying that she had a foul mouth.

She further stated that on the day of the incident, he attacked her after an argument and since she could not bear up the pain, she threw the child aside and jumped into the well nearby and later when she surfaced in the water, she held on to a stone to save her life.

She said that her husband too jumped into the well, though he could not swim and once he surfaced, he held on to some gutters, but he drowned again as the gutters broke.

The villagers had rescued her when she screamed for help, but as the water in the well was overflowing, when he was rescued, he was already dead, she said.

The coroner returned a verdict stating that the death had occurred by drowning.

Kuliyapitiya police led the inquiry.
