Iraq denies IS claims of shooting down fighter jet

Baghdad, June 18 (IANS): The Iraqi defence ministry denied on Thursday that one of its fighter planes was shot down by the Islamic State (IS), and termed the claim as an attempt at psychological warfare, Efe news agency reported.

A ministry statement on Thursday explained that the story circulated on some media outlets but was completely false.

The Iraqi military aircraft successfully completed their wide-scale missions against IS and none were affected, the statement added.

Iraqi security forces have been fighting IS militants in Anbar province since the terrorist group took control of its capital, Ramadi, in mid-May.

IS controls much territory in Iraq and Syria, in which it proclaimed its caliphate in June 2014.
