Left Front concurs on Advani's emergency fears

Kolkata, June 18 (IANS): West Bengal Left Front chairman Biman Bose on Thursday concurred with the views of senior BJP leader L.K. Advani who expressed fear over return of Emergency in the country by saying that "forces that can crush democracy have become stronger".

Slamming the Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the centre over a host of issues, Bose too expressed apprehension that an emergency may be proclaimed to stifle democracy.

"He (Advani) is observing what is happening in the country. He has realised how false information is being spread. The centre's claim of growth rate is vastly different from the actual rate. He is observing how the under the BJP black money is being converted into white," Bose told media persons here.

"The way black money is being laundered into the country and how those in power - the Bharatiya Janata Party - have got itself entangled into this. They are expert in converting black money into white," said the veteran Communist Party of India-Marxist leader.

Taking a jibe on Modi's "aachhe din (good days)" promise, Bose said there were wide spread starvation deaths and farmer suicides across the country.

"The promise of achche din has been reduced to a riddle. Nothing is happening, people are being deprived, dying of hunger and there is procession of farmer suicides.

"So, unable to solve all these problems, there may come a situation, when to stifle democracy, these people may resort to emergency.

"It is evident that he (Advani) has realised all these and made the remarks," said Bose.

The Front will also stage meetings, protest marches and demonstrations in all the districts of the state at June 25 midnight to mark the 40th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency.

Accusing the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government of spreading anarchy and stifling democracy in West Bengal, Bose said the Left will fight to upheld democratic rights.

"Besides making people aware of the perils of the Emergency, we also need to fight against the anarchy that this state government is spreading."

"We have to fight against this government under which opposition voices are being muzzled, democratic rights are being infringed and our people are being attacked. We will organise protest marches and demonstrate in all the districts," added Bose.

In an interview to the Indian Express ahead of the 40th anniversary of the imposition of emergency in India, Advani said "forces that can crush democracy, notwithstanding the constitutional and legal safeguards, are stronger".
