Mangaluru, Jun 19: Mangaluru bar association members wearing a red ribbons, boycotted the court sessions and protested at Mangaluru court premises on Friday June 19.

They demanded that the state government should approve the CBI investigation on 54 police personnel who were responsible for the assault on lawyers on March 2, 2012 in Bengaluru.

Advocate S P Chengappa said during the protest, "Police assualted the lawyers in Bengaluru who were later admitted to the hospitals. With this issue keeping in mind, the whole state bound lawyers protested and gave the issue to the CBI. After CBI did the investigation and when charge -sheet was about to be submitted on lawyers, mediapersons and police, 54 police were found guilty. But to take actions on the police officials one requires the state government's sanction. CBI gave an appeal to the state government to sanction, but the government has rejected the sanction."

"The amount of Rs 4 lac which is given for the dead lawyer's family or to the retired lawyer from lawyers' Welfare Fund has to be increased to Rs 8 lac. This matter has been already discussed with the state government by the Karnataka state lawyers parishath a year back. There is no response from the government and during the Belagavi sessions this month, the government must bring changes to the lawyers welfare act of 1986." Chengappa added.

Chengappa also mentioned that health insurance plan should be provided for the lawyers and also to their families.

Mangaluru bar association secretary Raghavendra, vice president Yashodhar, Sumana, Yatish and others were also present on this occasion.

The protest is held state-wide where the lawyers are not attending the court sessions.

Lawyers protest in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jun 19: More than a thousand lawyers gathered near the Mahatma Gandhi statue at MG Road to demand an action against the police who took action during the clash between the lawyers and journalists in 2012.

Nearly 2000 police personnel came to the site where the protest was held to control the situation.

The lawyers and journalists involved in the clash are facing a trial, but no action has been taken against the police who were also supposed to face the trail.

The clash between the lawyers and journalists had taken place during the hearing of a case involving Janardhan Reddy.
